It is very popular because (1) it is a good school academically, (2) nice sized city and good school spirit, (3) rolling admissions so you can have a solid acceptance early, and (4) relatively reasonable out of state cost and it gives merit aid. The have a good honors college and give a decent number of full scholarships for really strong students. The acceptance rate has gone down a bit but still over 50%. Clearly there are rejections, most people don’t talk about them here.

they do reject people, the admissions rate is below 50% now, but nobody is going to talk about their kid getting rejected unless it's a very selective school (Ivy-tier, UVA, etc.)

My DD applied to Pitt but I do not think she'll do well there. She has a 3.3 uw from a Bethesda public school; low rigor and a 1240 superscored SAT. A lot of community service but no other impressive ECs. I think it's a great school but not for her. I feel bad saying this but hoping for a rejection.

PP here. DD received notification today that they need to see mid-year grades. Do you think this is for admission to the main campus or a satellite campus? Should she reach out to her AO?

Only way to find out is to ask. As a point of reference, my daughter had a 33 ACT (~1450 SAT equivalent) on one try with no prep, a 3.8 unweighted GPA, 9 APs from a middle of the road MCPS and she has found Pitt to be VERY challenging academically. She’s in the biology program and it’s very difficult. It probably varies based on the major. I definitely wouldn’t do a satellite campus.

This is my concern. My DD is not a strong student; had low rigor classes; no APs but wanted to apply to Pitt becuase her Dad went there and she likes the campus. I was sure they would out right reject her because of her poor stats but instead are asking for mid-year grades. I do not think she will be succussful there.

It depends on the major. Have her apply. It is a family school for us. I didn't do great in HS but thrived there. Let her go. My parents were like you and sent me to a small school and it sucks. Transferred to Pitt and loved it.

Is she an athlete? That score and GPA seem low for Pitt unless she’s from a low-performing high school.

Those are good SAT's and grades.

Update: merit award posted 11/13/22
5k/yr (OOS)—so Pitt will probably be scratched off the list
(1480 SAT, top 5% of class, solid/typical but not wow ECs)

My son got in a few weeks ago but has not seen anything about merit...looks like you heard about merit quickly? Does not hearing quickly mean he is likely not getting any or just that some kids take longer? He's high stats so I expected some merit (or maybe they wait to see if high stats kids pull out for ED admission elsewhere?)

depend on the major, don't expect much if it is CS

No hooks. OOS CS major. 4.5, 1560, NMSF. ZERO merit (as of now)

Those are good SAT's and grades.

Not PP but I do not think 1230 is a good SAT.

It’s a perfectly fine SAT score but it’s below the 25% for Pitt. The GPA is fine as well, but it’s also significantly below average for Pitt as well. It’s all relative.

I agree it is low for Pitt, so why are they asking for mid-year grades and not rejecting?

Because they like her and want her to come as long as her mid year grades are good.

Bumping to see if anyone has had Pitt results recently. They updated the website to say 6-8 weeks for decision in November. DD's app went into review on Nov 17.

Pitt is a likely, but I am not going to lie, I would have like DD to have completed her application a lot sooner. It is not her first choice, but it is a solid choice and I worry that it is getting harder to get in.

Strong grades and test scores, applied with scores.

On College Confidential, a number of late October applicants were accepted 12/21.

They are closed this week for the holiday so I wouldn’t expect to receive any news right now.

After they ask for 1st semester grades how long does it take to hear back? Thanks in advance! DS was asked to send his grades and he did that 2 weeks ago. This is actually his first choice so he is so disappointed.

Thanks for the timing updates

Your DS already has 1st semester grades? My DD has 1st quarter grades but her notice from Pitt specifically requested 1sr semester grades which she will not have until late January.
