If it was cis pedo would fcps ban it?

Never would have even made the shelves. The only reason these made the shelves was under the guise of being inclusive to lgbtq. They need to find a gay friendly book without pedophilia. I’m sure there are a few out there.

I am pretty certain gay people want to to be seen as people with talents, passion and positivity, not just man-boy love 💗

Ugh. Again for everyone in the back. The story has a 22 year old man reflecting on a sexual experience that happened when he was in 4th grade…with another 4th grader. It is semi-autobiographical. The antecdote is in the story because the other kid (now a grown adult as well) is now a prominent member of the community.

A pornographic movie started with opening scene of a grandpa reflecting an experience in his college years is still porn.

If your goal is to get it removed, it can takes months.

If it’s so obviously terrible it could only take one email to the principal.

But if it’s less obvious then they should take time to carefully reviewed.

For example, how many idiots on here thought there was pedophilia in Lawn Boy - because they hadn’t actually read it.

One of the first questions on the form is “have you read it?”.

I stayed up last night to read it and now I got a greater issue with this book. 😂 authentic emotions and human attractions absolutely do not need to classify or define ones gender. gender is a social construct, human relationship should not be reduced to a hashtag.

I read it yesterday/early this morning as well. But I thought it was thought provoking and would lead to an interesting discussion about the idea of the American dream. Also, definitely not pedophilia. Every book in the library is not for every student, but there should be a book in the library for every student. If we take every book that is not in anyway controversial out of the library, I guarantee that book circulation goes down. Do you want non-readers or do you want critical thinkers?

The book is pretty graphic, if my kid secretly stash a copy under his pillow at age 16, fine. But if he read it at 12/6th grade, I would definitely have issues. When I studied classics in college, most of the incest, rape and torture weren’t this explicit and it did not deter us from being critical.

So why can’t we find supportive books that aren’t pornographic, bordering on pedophilia? We can surely do better.

Japan has a specialized genre for this. Maybe we should import some 🤔

There was no incest, rape, or torture in the book. And the book is in high school libraries (and two secondary libraries, but what are they supposed to do...only have content appropriate for middle schoolers in a high school library), so a 6th grader would not have access to it.

How exactly does something "border on pedophelia?" It either has a pedophile in the book or it does not. This particular book in question, does not.

Japan also has manga/anime. If you really want to see stuff that is almost porn, watch some anime/read some manga. Boobs everywhere.

Do they really need this book? What are the redeeming qualities of it that require that horrible language?

But, remember, there is another book being discussed. The other is a graphic novel with extremely explicit pictures. Please tell us the redeeming qualities of that book.

And, frankly, I find discussion of fellatio between two fourth grade boys extremely offensive. Porn? Maybe not. The language is certainly graphic

STOP SPREADING MISINFORMATION.

THERE IS NO PEDOPHILIA (AT ALL) OR PORNOGRAPHY.

Anyone who says that clearly hasn’t read the books. Just using them for faux outrage.

Well, for starters, a snippet of a professional review of Lawn Boy: Eminently readable and deeply thought-provoking, Evison's deceptively simple novel takes on tough issues such as race, sexual identity, and the crushing weight of American capitalism.

Snippet of review of Gender Queer: A book to be savored rather than devoured, this memoir will resonate with teens, especially fans of Alison Bechdel's Fun Home and Mason Deaver's I Wish You All the Best. It's also a great resource for those who identify as nonbinary or asexual as well as for those who know someone who identifies that way and wish to better understand.

Also, to be clear, there is literally ONE panel of the graphic novel that contains a B&W drawing that includes a strap on. And another panel where there are two people on top of each other. I'm sorry to inform you that your high school library has many books where sex is described. These books are about young adults. Spoiler alert: many teens have sex. The book in question actually deals with the character feeling uncomfortable by how far the relationship has gone and it is worked out. I want this book to be available to my kids. If you don't, then tell your kid not to check it out. That's how libraries work. If you want to be really controlling, log into their library account (same login as their fcps computer) and see what they have checked out.

In the eyes of at least one School Board member, nothing can apparently be too explicit or graphic if it somehow can be explained away as a means to promote acceptance of the LGBTQ community.

That line of thinking is unacceptable and needs to be repudiated. But don’t expect this School Board to speak out - some think of themselves as sophisticates who have no problem with this type of material and others live in abject fear of offending any of their main political supporters.

The term “graphic novel “refers to the format of the book. The illustration itself is far from “graphic”. It is certainly nothing more explicit than one would see in a PG-13 movie, and it is a cartoon. A drawn cartoon. Like a comic book. So I comic book with one frame that illustrates the sex acts non-explicit way. I do understand that that may be alarming to your sensibilities, but compared to the steady diet of media with scantily clad people and explicit sex acts detailed, as well as the ready availability of pornography on any students phone or other devices,
It barely even registers. The only people outraged were shocked by this are the people who are hearing all of us described out of context without actually seeing at themselves because they are being duped by people who want to turn this into a giant political issue.

I’m sure it would shock you to actually be exposed to some rational facts, but the total purchase price of every copy of the graphic novel and question is probably under $50. Every single copy in the entire county. So, I find it hard to believe that the purchase of these particular books which clearly seemed to suit the deed of particular students served by the librarians who added them to their collection, would make even the slightest bit of difference regarding priorities for school construction. To my knowledge, It is not possible to construct a Classroom for under $50. To my knowledge also, the school board does not make individual purchasing decisions for individual books for individual libraries. You have been so thoroughly duped into believing that this is a serious issue that you were not even beginning to think in a rational manner. It is an entirely emotional reaction, which is exactly what the political operatives intended when they decided to raise this as a manufactured issue.

I definitely don’t want mt kids reading that shit or having access to it at schools. I doubt the books are coming back.
