+1, this isn't anything new.

Agree. When I graduated high school over 20 years ago, there were many kids in the top 10% whose first choice was Northwestern. It was not an ivy backup. It was a dream School among the honors kids.

I guess people are amused - or scratching their heads - cuz what’s the big deal with NU? How does it differ from Vandy, Emory, Rice, U of ND, USC, Georgetown, JHU, WashU? These are all great schools. So what?

Well, first of all, why are you bringing that existential question into a thread about a donation that Northwestern received? The fact that you are reveals more about your intentions and insecurities than it does anything about the school itself.

Second, if you really want to play this game, Northwestern routinely outranks every single one of the aforementioned schools (with the exception of JHU) across various metrics and criteria, and pretty much always have. I absolutely agree that all those schools are great, including Northwestern. There's more than enough love to go around

!

Ummm... it’s not about me, this thread isn’t about me, my alleged insecurities,.... it’s about NU. Go ahead, tell us how it differs from these other great schools whose rankings always go up and down and trade places.

Lol when has NU ever traded places with Vandy, Emory, Rice, ND, USC, Georgetown, or WashU? I'm also not even talking about rankings. Look at alumni achievements, notable prizes and awards, academic reputation scores, research output, etc. Northwestern and JHU are routinely considered above these other schools. If you want to keep your head in the sand and keep claiming otherwise, that's great! Have fun at wherever you or your kid ends up.

And again, why are you asking about this in a thread about a donation that NU received? That just screams jealousy of some sort, born from a misguided belief that Northwestern doesn't deserve a donation of this size anymore than these other schools you've listed. Or you're just weird af and have issues with picking up on social cues.

It’s not about me and definitely not about my kid. So how does it really differ cuz I am sure these great schools have their share of honors.

If you're asking in earnest, then do your own research. Since you're the one that's suggesting something contrary to what's established, the onus is on you if you'd like to provide new evidence or data. In a variety of metrics and criteria that most people would consider in evaluating an institution's strength, Northwestern (and JHU, since you mentioned it), outpace the other schools you've mentioned.

If I were in the Chicago and surrounding area, NU is seen at or a notch below how DMV people view JHU. Got it.

What? That’s not even true, and that doesn’t prove or disprove anything?

It proves NU is at or just below JHU. JHU is a great school. NU must also be a great school. This message got lost in all the insults in this thread.

DP- If you’re from the Chicago area, Northwestern definitely isn’t seen as a notch below JHU. Native Chicagolander here.

Not from Chicago but am more familiar with JHU. I’d put JHU on the level of the ivies, no matter how DCUM readers might distinguish different tiers among ivies. I can at least understand where NU posters are coming from.

I’m the native Chicagolander (though I live elsewhere now). I agree, and I would put both Northwestern and JHU at the level of the Ivies. I don’t have any affiliation with either school.

No affiliation with either school either, and I think of both as non-Ivy-Ivies.

It's all a muddle at that level anyway. All schools in the top 20 or so are very, very good.

Both Pat and Shirley Ryan went to Northwestern and met there, and apparently love the school very much. They're also wildly wealthy, and it's good ol' alma mater. What's there to be surprised about?

Who are these people?

Did you learn those circular reasoning skills at Northwestern?

No affiliation to Northwestern. You asked a question, and I answered.

Do you have difficulty with reading comprehension and/or an inability to conduct basic Google searches?

Ignore them PP, it's a classic prestige defense squad move. When logic and reasoning fail, they turn to personal insults.

Please cite some alums in the last 20 years who've done anything really noteworthy. Please don't name any j-school dorks. The only one I can think of is the former Groupon guy, Andrew Mason? He seems like like more of an outlier than anything. In my experience, Northwestern undergrad is honestly a cringy nerd college which has more of a state school vibe than an elite college ethos. The social kids we know transferred out. It's also really tough with a quarter system, so it's both hard and expensive, but with basically zero prestige or brand appeal nationwide.

You sound really bitter for some reason? And your assertions are nowhere near accurate or true.

Just use Google next time, it's easier.

Have you considered it might not be the same poster you are arguing with about the two pp?

So many pages to get the take away that Northwestern alum are insecure.

“ After graduating from Northwestern University in 2003 with a degree in music,[1] Mason worked in web design for Chicago entrepreneur Eric Lefkofsky.”

His old boss and co-founder of Groupon went to Michigan

Funny that you got that takeaway; I'm getting the opposite impression; instead, it seems there are some deeply insecure detractors on this thread.
