Good episode, glad they wrapped up Kevin. I will say they I'm less emotionally invested in the Pearsons this season. Just wrap it up, already.

Yes, “Sofee” and why does Kevin have the valentine?

He was writing out Valentines to all the girls in his class (in flashbacks).

Yes I understand that but the point if a valentine is to give it to those people. You don’t tuck it away at age 8.

I read on another site that the card asked if someone would be his Valentine, circle yes or no. She probably circled yes and gave it back.

“Yes” was circled, so she must’ve given it back.

Weren't they teens? High school, maybe? I had a wallet in high school.

I’m frankly surprised it wasn’t destroyed in the house fire that killed jack.

He always had it with him in his wallet.

How old were the kids in the fire? They had wallets at that age?

Kevin wasn't in the fire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2dk6SNmHGw

I really wanted it to be Madison. I had a "Sophie" in my life and when we were grownups and at that crossroads, we both knew to leave it in the past. So I feel unsettled about it being Sophie. But for a TV show, I guess it makes sense. And I knew it would be her because after her mom's funeral, the comment about seeing each other again the next time someone died.

He was 8, not 5.

No one said he was five.

PP said an 8 year old wouldn't know how to spell Sophie. I think a 5 year old wouldn't but an 8 year old would. That was my point.

Lol. No, they definitely didn’t. But I’ll suspend my disbelief bc I love this show

They were 17. I carried a purse with a wallet at that age. Plus wasn’t Kev drinking then? He would need a fake I’d, in a wallet.

Yes, it was. And I cried anyway.

It had to be Sophie. I hated this convoluted episode. No way would he end up with Katie Lowes who was just introduced last week. And he and Cassidy have established multiple times that they are better off as friends. There were a few gems like Rebecca’s talk with Sophie towards the end but otherwise the episode could have been better after the highs of the last few episodes. But I’ve always been on Team Sophie so I am happy overall.

So much dynamite and so little POW! A shocking underperformance by the writers this episode. But all in all still a win. (Although Mandy Moore may have had the best scene when she talked to Sophie).

There was so much pre-hotel bed chemistry and everything fizzled after. I feel there was so much unmet potential. But I still root for K&S

Is it me or was the two of them in bed together not hot at all? I think they have wonderful chemistry outside the sack but in? Meh

The lack of chemistry in bed was intentional to 1) Throw the audience off about the ultimate outcome, or just keep is guessing 2) Show that Sophie-at the time- was having misgivings about giving K another chance

No, it was lazy writing.

More like lazy directing. The scene was not set up well.

The bad writing came first. And that couldn’t be saved by direction.

And they were older teens who definitely had wallets by that point.

Isn’t forgiveness part of love? And if they had to stayed together would his drinking have gotten as bad as it did? Couldn’t work it out together?

Playing devils advocate but is it possible this is a red herring and he ends up with someone else? They’ve already tried twice and third time is not usually the charm. First love and teenage hormones do not make a life time of love.

Read the articles in ew and tvline quoting the writers and Alexandra Breckinridge. There is no red herring. There are 4 episodes left and the next one is solely about Miguel. They are moving on from the love lives of the Big 3.

Anonymous wrote:I finally watched the episode today. As others have said, Kate would constantly criticize Toby for the way he parented the children. Toby would try to make improvements. But what about Kate? She would break down when Toby criticized her. She would never try to make improvements to her own life. She acted as if she didn't think she need to make any improvements/do anything to save the marriage. It was all on Toby to make the changes.

Her character really did get worse as the show went on. There was no personal growth from her at all.

And Philip - yeah, we needed to see more back story as to what ignited that spark with Kate. From what I remember of his personality in previous seasons, he was kind of a jerk. But to now have him love Kate? Doesn't ring true at all.

+1
Phillip was shown as being pretty snarky and dismissive of Kate when she first started working at the school. Granted, I now see we're supposed to realized his "crusty" exterior was just a layer of protection over the traumatic loss of his wife, but still. As for the first wife, couldn't the writers simply have said she left him due to the IVF issue - and not that she was then hit by a drunk driver? Honestly, not everything has to be so tragic and dramatic.

OMG, so true! Didn't Coco Chanel famously advise to get fully dressed to go out, then take off one piece of jewelry? This Is Us writers should write their scripts, then go back and remove one tragic event.

Perfect!

I thought in earlier seasons Sophie was a doctor but now she's a traveling nurse?

She has always been a nurse.

She has Philip to lean and bring chalk on if it is just her mother dying. One of the Pearson daughters remarks that Uncle Kevin will having enough food for an army AGAIN, so this has happened before. I also think we are seeing two death scenes that have been carefully crafted and edited to appear as one in the flashforwards.

Right before the wedding when Toby called, it seemed to be a peace offering. So maybe they have found a way to co parent and get along. They didn't hate each other, so one cheated - they just grew apart. And Rebecca may not even remember that they're divorced. So him being there to support his kids and kids grandmother isn't so crazy.

Toby is single (no ring, bed empty next to him) when he comes over to the house with the chalk so that scene must take place a while after the scene at the bar concert with grown Jack and grey haired Kate.

When he comes over with chalk, the kids are preteens, about 10 years from now (we see Kevin's twins, who are about the same age as jack who is on his way). Grown Jack and Gray Kate has to be about 10 years after that.

Isn’t Hailey the exact same age as the twins so Jack a few years older? Maybe he hasn’t married his gf yet hence no ring.

Saying “Jack is on his way” would be an odd thing to say about a young teen. Jack is probably driving himself.

Except Jack is blind...

and Toby says "I just spoke to Jack, they're on their way" - they not he

Maybe Kate, Jack and Hailey are arriving together.
