Harris - Hastings Law School

Notice a difference?

Are we really going to suggest that only ivy-league grads can be on SCOTUS?

UC Hastings Law was higher ranked back when Kamala attended than it is now, but still not first tier. There is a reason top legal talent tends to come from the Ivy law schools. Regardless, it's true she doesn't have the typical judicial or scholarly background for SCOTUS.

That really is ridiculous. People don't always go to the best school they can get into - sometimes they choose for location, or cost, or other reasons. It doesn't make their brain or skills any different. (I paid a lot of money to go to Columbia Law School - I should have taken the deal Hastings offered me.)

I roll my eyes at you.

given harris' race/gender, she would've gotten huge inducements/support to go to a t3...certainly a t6

Maybe! But also - she might have had her reasons for choosing this totally good law school. My point is that these US News-obsessed posters are silly.

There is no way Harris has the legal chops for the Supreme Court. Even RBG would wrinkle her brow at that.

True, she really doesn't have the usual academic pedigree or the traditional professional experience for this. I think Kagan is the only sitting SCOTUS justice who didn't serve as a judge first, but she had been a tenured law professor and dean at prestigious institutions, and served as US Solicitor General, so had experience arguing before the SC. Harris would be a highly irregular appointment. I think it's VP or AG, with the latter most likely.

If Harris wanted AG she would have taken it in 2014. She didn’t, and then she ran for President.

Recent NY Times article stated she's open to AG now.

Kamala Harris would be an exceptional choice as AG. She knows better than most how to fix the criminal justice system.

Her strength on law enforcement issues is the problem with her as the VP choice right now. She was part of the system for so long and went along with it. Progressive prosecutors today are much bolder. They do not need to show they are "tough on crime" to get elected.

Biden himself already has a long record of supporting police and being supported by the police. Adding Sen. Harris to the ticket only reinforces this record.

Someone like Mayor Lance-Bottoms would be better on the ticket. She is good on TV and has run a major city for almost 3 years. Or Biden could pick someone who has strengths in other areas like Susan Rice and run out the clock.

Elizabeth Warren will still be a strong partner for President Biden in the Senate and has shown she can help raise a lot of money. Klobuchar is done nationally.

Ofcourse Harris is open to AG, she tried and she is not an appealing candidate for President

Don't think Atlanta is looking very good right now.

Of course not! We limit the SCOTUS to Harvard/Yale alums only. Other Ivies are not good enough. Ginsburg would have been Chief Justice if she had stayed at Harvard instead of transferring to Columbia.

How long has it been since a politician has been on the Supreme Court? Quite a while, I think. Pretty sure they all have experience being judges, except Kagan who had other impressive legal chops.
Schools aside, I'm not sure Harris has the background. Judges, with the help of their clerks, write opinions. Has Harris ever been a clerk for a judge?

Another eye roll fo the fact that people who are shading Harris for UC-Hastings don’t factor in that she likely has always wanted to run for office. You to go to Columbia or Harvard and then come home and get into CA elective office. It makes you appear smug and elite. If you want to run for state office, go to the highest ranked local law school you can.

Y'all are in denial. Lawyers always go to the best law school (tier) they can get into, especially over 30 years ago. It's not like cost was a factor.
Anonymous
cost nor family* was a factor. UC Hastings was the best she could get into.

Lol what?

If that was the case, senate republicans wouldn’t be littered Harvard grads

Cotton, sasse, and Hawley for example. And they have to run in states that are anti elite colleges more than California

Her sister attended top-tier schools.
