Notice a difference?

Are we really going to suggest that only ivy-league grads can be on SCOTUS?

Of course not! We limit the SCOTUS to Harvard/Yale alums only. Other Ivies are not good enough. Ginsburg would have been Chief Justice if she had stayed at Harvard instead of transferring to Columbia.

How long has it been since a politician has been on the Supreme Court? Quite a while, I think. Pretty sure they all have experience being judges, except Kagan who had other impressive legal chops.
Schools aside, I'm not sure Harris has the background. Judges, with the help of their clerks, write opinions. Has Harris ever been a clerk for a judge?

No, she hasn't. She is not qualified for a SCOTUS nom and would never be confirmed if Biden were foolish enough to nom her.

Biden has promised to nominate an African American woman. That eliminates probably 90% of the people who would otherwise have been on his list. If Sen. Harris is not selected as the VP nominee or AG, she would have to be on any short list for the Supreme Court. It would be difficult for Biden to pass her over three times. She reportedly is bored in the Senate.

Sen. Harris would bring a unique real world perspective to the Court. It is totally irrelevant where she went to law school. She will have her choice of law clerks from all the top ranked schools, if that is important to her.

The SCOTUS pick will likely be Leondra Kruger who went to Yale Law School, clerked for Stevens, was deputy solicitor general and was appointed to the California Supreme Court at the age of 38. In other words, someone highly qualified for the position.

Good suggestion. I figured it would be Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Kruger has the benefit of being younger.

+1 Kruger is a rock star, who specializing in SCOTUS litigation before becoming a state SC justice. Ketanji Jackson, DC District Judge, who was interviewed by Obama for the last opening in his admin, and front and center on the McGahn case, is another strong possibility. Both are far more qualified than Harris. Whoever is pushing her for this (I think the same vocal person pushing her for VP) knows nothing about SCOTUS qualifications.

Anyone could be forgiven for that mistake given the most recent appointments.

Another reason Kamala Harris is out as SCOTUS justice is her age. All of Trump’s picks have been younger than 55, the earliest Kamala would be conformed would likely be 57 (assuming Ginsburg stays on for the Spring 2021 term).

I strongly dislike the most recent appointments but they followed traditional tracks and were qualified.

How is she not qualified as the former atty general for CA?

Sen. Harris is most likely to be the AG, but she will be on any short list for the first Supreme Court nomination if she is not. There are 15 US Senators who later were appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court (that is called precedent), not to mention numerous other politicians who got there. Sen. Harris has practical experience on issues that will be important to President Biden, and a personal relationship with him.

Oh please. The last senator to serve on SCOTUS was in the 1950s. There is a very good reason one hasn't been appointed since then. I get you love Harris, but she's never been on the SCOTUS shortlist before and there are excellent reasons for that. Let it go!

See PPs on the usual qualifications. 8 of 9 sitting justices were judges who clerked at the Court, the 9th (Kagan) had sterling academic credentials and had argued before the Court. Kamala has a very different legal background. If she were put forward, it is highly unlikely she could be confirmed. If she were put forward it would basically just be a giant eff you to Kavanaugh, and Biden is not the type to sully the Court in that way.

Racism is real. How are her credentials less that O'Connor who was never a law clerk/barely a judge before SCOTUS?

O’Connor went to Stanford and was a Judge for six years before being nominated. There are several qualified black women to be SCOTUS, Harris is not one of them. Leslie Abrams Gardner is another contender. She went to Yale, clerked for a Judge and is now a Federal Judge.
