Yeah, the Maret supporters' argument basically comes down to "we deserve this." That's it. And, one more time- Maret is the only organization trying to monopolize the field during its most useful times. Everyone else, including Hardy supporters and the aftercare program at Jelleff just want DPR to follow DC law when deciding who to allocate time to, rather than unilaterally giving the field to a private organization in a sweetheart deal. Splitting the fields after school between Hardy and the aftercare kids seems like the perfect solution. |
It's an interesting question. My take on the slur (Maret's mascot) is that it is used in reference to all people of French nationality regardless of where their parents or grandparents originated. It's generally considered to be offensive, regardless. I'm not sure what any of this has to do with being "entitled". |
That's my point, it's a nationality thing. Entitled is presuming that every French person is the same "Race" Nationality = Racism works in a more homogeneous country perhaps, but at that point, it's still racist. |
"We deserve this because we're so awesomely rich and powerful!" |
An interesting thing about the DC law is that it doesn't allow for splitting. It's absolute: if you're a higher priority you get priority, if you're not you don't. So if the Jelleff program wanted to it could take all of the time, it's a DPR program and highest priority. It's a flawed system. |
Would you like the kids at the BTCGW to bring in their piggy banks? |
Well, it would certainly make more sense for the after-school program to have the field all the time than for Maret to. |
DPR could split the field into different reserveable sections. The BGC would first priority for one section (as a programmatic partner) and then other sections could be given to DCPS and DC Charter schools. So yes, the field could be shared if DPR was willing to subdivide the Jelleff facility. Which is what the BCG, Hardy, SWW, and other DC schools are asking. |
Under DPR rules they only way a lower priority group can use it is if a higher priority group doesn't apply for the permit. Splitting it into more units doesn't change that, there's no prohibition on a group reserving multiple facilities at the same time. Of course, DPR violates its own rules all the time, every season. The fact that they make no sense is largely irrelevant because they're never followed anyway. |
That shouldn't be na.insurmountavle problem and it can be worked around if the parties involved act in good faith. |
I‘ve felt persecuted by a French waiter or two... |
Don’t call the police or the feds. They themselves may adopt the idea as an an enhanced interrogation technique. Hold a suspect in a room for two hours with nothing to do but watch DC Council blathering and grandstanding on a community access TV channel, and a person will confess to anything! |
The Jelleff issue should matter to DCPS and Charter parents even if they don’t have kids at Hardy. This is an issue that will come up again. SWW is struggling to find field space. Wilson HS can barely get any time in the Wilson pool. Same with Deal. Basis needs more field access. DGS and DPR are nightmare agencies that need to be held accountable |
The problem is that Ward 3 schools are overcrowded and will become more so, which means more kids chasing limited faculties. In Bowser’s latest housing “plan” she wants to add nearly 4OOO more homes in “Rock Creek West” in the next 5-6 years in part, she says, so more families will have access to the better public schools. A noble goal, but where is her plan to add more school capacity, fields and park facilities? And how would she pay for it? By requiring developers who would profit handsomely from zoning changes and new project opportunities to pay into an infrastructure fund, as some other jurisdictions require? Fat chance in the District of Cronyism. |
"Forced" because I was actually asked to watch the testimony to figure out if the DPR guy was wearing a hearing aid or was being fed responses. Then I was pointed to this... wonderful forum ![]() |
