Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
DP, I would be fine with sending my kids to Skyview but if I lived in one of the handful of neighborhoods that is getting split off from the rest of the community to go there, I would also be pissed. |
|
They could have made this where Westfield would have comparable demographics to the other schools (except, of course, Oakton.) Those along Walney and Bull run would have made it level. Ironic that they are sending one of the Bull Run neighborhoods that is closer to Centreville to Westfield.
I cannot believe how they did this. Is it just those who scream loudest? Or, is it Dixit's friends? |
It looks like some Poplar Tree zoned areas separate Brookfield zone from CHS. |
What a stupid post. None of this is caused by whatever quality of school Skyview is or will be. |
Most of the Bull Run areas being considered were lower income areas but there was one single family neighborhood. They moved the poorest SPA, a large apartment building where families double up in apartments. The revised scenarios pull lower income kids out of Centreville HS and send them to Westfield. And pull lower income kids out of Chantilly and send them to Westfield, without balancing them out with new students from other areas. |
It’s clear that the decision to purchase the school was rushed and not thought through. Here lies the consequences of the ill-informed hurried decisions of a flawed process. Or am I mistaken that everyone is happy with this outcome? Because I see a lot of complaining here. |
I agree that this seems to have been what they did. And it made sense before Reid got on the phone demanding edits. If you are going to create a split feeder, move the bused kids and keep the walkers. The bus ride to Westfield from that part of Brookfield wouldn't be much longer than to Chantilly. |
The streets don't connect to Brookfield. It is a "newer" development (though not new!) It is actually right across from Greenbriar West which would make more sense. |
DP. It was obvious to many from the beginning that a school at the KAA site would draw primarily from Westfield and that there would be big fights later about who did or didn’t get moved into Westfield to backfill the school. Those chickens are finally coming home to roost. And now the preening School Board members who couldn’t stop slapping themselves on the back for buying KAA will have to deal with the unpleasant side. |

Westfield is the biggest loser with the Skyview purchase.
They are destaffing their young, energetic teachers and sending them to Skyview because they are losing too many students in 9th/10th next year to keep their staff. They are losing half their neighborhoods to Skyview. They are going to end up with a higher FARMs rate than they have now, but fewer students, so they will end up losing higher academic classes, because there won't be enough high achieving students to support staffing. Chantilly and Centreville and Skyview will all have much "better" demographics and better academics, so Westfield will then continue to decline and spiral as families finagle to get their kids into those other schools instead. |
It seems like they are dealing with that by only moving poor neighborhoods who don't contribute to their political campaigns. Even Kathy Smith kept her corruption on the down low. Editing a map in real time b/c your politically connected friend calls and complains is crazy. |
Chantilly needed relief. Centreville needed relief. Westfield needed relief. Oakton could use relief and will need it shortly. They should have developed reasonable boundaries and set a short time frame to set them. Why they delayed it beyond the county wide study is puzzling. But, Skyview is needed. |
| But, the way they have done this really makes the School Board and Reid look like hypocrites. |
This makes sense to me. The consultants two scenarios are logical for the most part before Reid meddled. I think LC and most of Bull Run were kept off the table for distance reasons. The western half of Brookfield is closer. We were saying on here all along that it made the most sense to move that part of Cub Run (moved in both scenarios) and Walney Oaks which abuts it. |
Oakton stays the exact same number of student as currently under both scenarios. Its ridiculous. They needed to move kids out. |
