One thing I don't understand is what would change between next year and 2027-28, when neighborhoods will be officially within the Skyview boundary but lots of students will still be attending their base schools. Are they going to make those students take a bus to Skyview and a second bus to the base school? |
I am not a decider, but I think it means that buses will go to the schools you are assigned. Juniors and Seniors will still get transportation to base schools. But, that is just what I think should happen. |
| I know Oakton HS families wouldn't want to leave Oakton HS, Chantilly HS families wouldn't want to leave Chantilly HS. Are those wanting to go to Skyview HS primarily the families under South Lakes HS who want to have AP for their kids, or are these the families from Westfield HS who want their kids to avoid longer commutes? |
I think it’s fair to say Westfield families north of Route 50 and South Lakes families who don’t want IB are the most enthusiastic about Skyview but there are some Oakton families who’d prefer a shorter commute to Skyview and some Chantilly families who’d prefer a less crowded school. It’s not like everyone at a particular school feels the same. |
This. From the parents I've talked to in our neighborhood north of 50, the kids who play sports are staying at Westfield while those who don't are moving to Skyview. |
That would make sense. No one north of 50 should be at Westfield. |
| Can someone explain to me why Skyview doesn’t have sports? They have a soccer field, a track and a swimming pool. Why can’t they have at least some sports? |
It has something to do with joining VHSL (Virginia High School League) I would think they are welcome to have after school soccer club, etc. And, they will still have Physical Education during the school day. Those facilities can be used then--but I doubt they will have swimming available. There is some talk of an academy for lifesaving instruction. |
Why would VHSL block them? I’m sure a lot more people would be ok with Skyview if not for lack of VHSL sports. It’s a vital part of the high school experience for many athletes. |
I think they will have it the second year. It may have had something to do with the timeline. Applying, etc. |
If they have one VHSL sport then kids cannot play other VHSL sports that they don’t have at what would have been their base HS. VHSL sets the rules and it is all or nothing. So while they could have soccer, basketball, track, cross country, swimming and the like they could have the other teams due to lack of facilities. The students interested in those sports wouldn’t be able to play them at their old base school. They will have intermural sports during the year and are planning on having sports, except maybe varsity football for safety reasons, in the second year. |
| The school board has announced they are redoing these. This is a completely useless thread. Lock it. |
100% the main RIO lady is against Skyview because she wants her daughter to play Oakton sports. |
We are a Chantilly family who wants to go to Skyview. |

In connection with the Skyview boundary review, the new consultants retained by FCPS analyzed the average distance in miles to school for students in the 24 high school pyramids, presumably for the current school year:
Langley 7.3 Oakton 5.7 Westfield 5.3 Fairfax 4.5 Hayfield 3.2 Lake Braddock 3.2 Robinson 3.2 Woodson 3.1 Edison 3.0 Mount Vernon 3.0 South Lakes 3.0 West Potomac 3.0 Marshall 2.9 McLean 2.7 West Springfield 2.6 Herndon 2.5 South County 2.5 Annandale 2.4 Centreville 2.4 Falls Church 2.4 Lewis 2.4 Madison 2.4 Chantilly 2.2 Justice 1.8 Skyview's opening may reduce the average distance for Westfield and Oakton. That would leave one very obvious outlier. |
