My child has made a lot of new friends at Western and is bummed that they won’t go to the same high school. They are hoping that we’ll be rezoned to Western but we’ve discussed and they are aware that a lot of parents feel differently. It’s just such a bummer because all of their new friends PLUS a lot of the kids they play sports with in CYA will end up at Western. They would like to remain with their Carson and CYA friends. As a parent, I want this for them too. It’s hard to see friends ripped apart (this already happened when a handful of kids ended up at Hughes this year) and we expected it for high school but wouldn’t it be great if all the Carson kids could stay together?? That’s what we want - and like I said, I’m a parent of an older “Crossfield kid”. I know some of my kid’s friends and their parents feel the same way. Even some whose older siblings are at Oakton. Not every parent of a high schooler likes it - I’ve heard about bullying and too much competitiveness. I really just want stability.

I know this is the status quo - like if we stayed zoned to Oakton, this is what would happen, but now that there is another option, I agree. My kids would prefer to stay in school with the friends they meet through sports (although the McNair and Coates kids usually play in the Herndon and Reston leagues). But the only kids we ever meet that are going to Oakton are Navy, and there aren't actually that many Navy kids in CYA either. I don't know where the majority of them play.

There are a lot Navy kids in CYA.

I guess my kids are just never paired with them. Most of the people they meet are actually Poplar Tree/Rocky Run or Floris/Carson for whatever reason.

There are plenty of Franklin kids and from Franklin feeders in CYA.

Lees Corner and Oak Hill kids, sure, but we've never met a single Waples Mill kid in CYA. I'm not surprised, Chantilly and the schools we practice in are nowhere near Waples Mill.

Waples Mill Elementary is a good distance from Chantilly but kids who live in neighborhoods just down from Folkstone/ Westwood Hills on Fox Mill are zoned to Waples with the exception of one that goes to Flint. I’d imagine they likely skew towards Chantilly or Reston sports.

My son plays cya basketball and has practices at Waples Mill

My daughter's age group (5-6 graders) only has two girls from Waples Mill in CYA. I think most Waples kids play for Vienna rec league.

Nope, the bully is the woman leading this effort. She bullies the kids and she bullies other parents. IYKYK - lots of people have piped up on this board about her.

DP without a dog in the fight here. You guys have been bashing this woman relentlessly. I think you’re turning a lot of people off of your cause.

May want to dial it back. Approach it from a standpoint that people are looking out for their kids and will doggedly fight for them, just like you are.

Yeah, also no dog in the fight and it seems like this is almost becoming more of a personalities fight than one over school assignments.

I think what you’re seeing is pent up frustration in how this person acts across many settings, this just being another example but of course a bit higher stakes. I haven’t been posting repeatedly but am familiar with some of what goes on. I don’t think bossing other adults around and talking trash about other kids and parents (which this person does, and I think where the bitterness is coming from) is part of fighting for your kid.

One thing I think we can all agree on is that Reid and the school board have royally screwed up the rollout, and that dragging out uncertainty for months is a terrible way to treat families.

I just don't like that they are using their role on the PTO to further their own agenda. They can have their own opinions but it's not right to claim you represent the whole school.

Question: has the PTO taken an official stand on this. Are they using PTO communication?

A person's beliefs and understanding evolve over time through new experiences, information, and personal growth. What seems right in one moment may be re-evaluated later as a new perspective emerges, and holding a belief too rigidly can lead to closed-mindedness.

It is wise to remain open to changing your mind, as that reflects a healthy, dynamic thought process rather than a stagnant one.

With the PTO hosting a meeting with a school board member where they are pre screening the questions that can be asked? Yeah I’d say so!

I just noticed the FCPS website is slightly updated:

1. Confirms that the Board voted to open the new western high school in August 2026 for the 2026-27 school year as a comprehensive high school with traditional boundaries, which includes a special programming pathway option.

2. In Year 1, enrollment will be "opt-in" for rising 9th and 10th graders from five specific overcrowded pyramids: Westfield, Chantilly, Oakton, South Lakes, Centreville

3. Confirms bus service will only be provided to students who live within the eventual boundary once it is drawn.

4. Boundaries for the new western high school will be determined by late spring 2026. (May?)

More importantly we got a timeline now.

December 1 - 8: Parent Zoom Information Sessions

Morning and evening virtual information sessions led by the planning principal, the Instructional Services Department (ISD), and the Chief of Schools staff.

December 8 - 19: Student Information Sessions

Optional information sessions for all rising 9th and 10th grade students in the five western pyramids: Centreville, Chantilly, Oakton, South Lakes, and Westfield. Sessions will take place during existing intervention/return periods.

December 19: Formal Opt-In and Enrollment Analysis Begins

Families of rising 9th and 10th grade students in the western pyramids will receive a formal opt-in form. Using this form, families will be able to say whether or not they would like their child(ren) to attend the new high school for the 2026-27 school year.

Week of January 12, 2026: Initial Enrollment Analysis

FCPS staff will review families’ opt-in forms which will help determine our next steps. This analysis will specifically inform how close we are to meeting our goal of enrolling 1,000 students.

Here is the link to the page with the timeline.

WHY are they choosing the name before the boundary? Makes no sense at all.

So put up or shut up time is sooner than most of us thought it would be. At least we will resolve the opt-in and registration issue pretty early on.

Well May is better than June, I guess.

And the opt in is due in January.
