Official Government Shutdown 2023 Thread

I need a new job given that I'd much rather be shutdown for 3 months with no pay than go back to the SEC. At least this clarifies for me that I personally need to quit - when you hate something so much that you're rooting for a shutdown, time to go.

I should say so. To be fair, cooler heads right here have been saying for days that there would not be a shutdown. Sorry if folks were too optimistic about having a shutdown.

You don’t work for SEC because they are fee funded and were never shutting down. So probably the rest is lies too.

Wonder how much of the posts here are GRU agents trying undermine Ukraine funding.

that’s tinfoil stuff, no?

Wouldn't have been so optimistic but for the fact that I despise working for government and the SEC - or maybe all government, IDK, the SEC is my first and last government job. Good luck to all making a lifetime career at these agencies. I'm out.

it will be hard for the dems not to support this. My worry is that the dems are now in a losing position for the budget negotiations. if they vote yes on this, the GOP will be aggressive about not including any Ukraine spending in the FY24 budget. then what? all the news is reporting is that there is now an option to keep the government open. but why are the dems not pushing back on reporters that there has always been an option--the bi-partisan agreement from the debt deal that passed. the house could take that up. if dems cave they have to cave for the final budget.

Yes. Democrats will be in a weaker position. But they are already. The fact that theyre already considering this instead of saying "we have a deal" shows they will roll over. They always will because they're not willing to burn it down. It's death by a thousand cuts instead.

If Congress gets a raise in this CR will that impact the pay cap? I know it’s tied to something but not sure what.

No, it’s tied to a pay level for executive appointees, not Member pay, which has been fixed to around $175k since 2009.

This is going to pass. So far on motion to suspend the rules and pass, as amended:

R - yea (95), nay (27)
D - yea (128), nay (2)

So, the D's have overwhelmingingly put down the HFC and this 45 day CR is going to pass. Government will stay open.

Can the senate pass this quickly absent unanimous consent?

This isn’t cooler heads prevailing, it’s Dems not wanting hostages to be taken. That’s it. Don’t try to act like the Rs are efficient and pragmatic leaders.

No the SEC does shut down. It shut down in 2018-2019 and will do so again. Read it’s shutdown plan

Do you think Biden will veto it since they stripped the Ukraine aid?
