1 yr old dies after being bitten by friendly pit mix

Anonymous
I am an adult woman who was attacked by a friend's male pit bull 5 minutes after being in her house. One minute his tail was wagging, and within 2 seconds he lunged at my face and caused several wounds (including one in the corner of my eye) that needs many stitches. I will require plastic surgery in August to revise a few of the scars. It was a very traumatizing experience for me. I can only imagine what it would be like for a small child or another dog. And yes, these are the people who dress their dog up in pajamas at Christmastime and post pictures of him and gush about how sweet he is. Needless to say, our friendship was forever changed by this and the county has pursued dangerous dog charges against them due to the nature of my injuries and the hospital's recommendation to animal control.

No one should own these dogs.

I’m so sorry that happened to you. I posted on another thread a few months ago about a good friend who was dog sitting her dad’s “sweet little pitt” and her mothers Chihuahua when they went on vacation. While she was dog sitting her dad’s pit bull it attacked and killed her mom‘s Chihuahua. She has no idea what set the pitbull off, but not only did it severely injure the Chihuahua, which had to be put to sleep but it also bit my friend in her face because without thinking she tried to separate the dogs She had to get plastic surgery or you can still see the scars where she was bitten. Needless to say they had to put that pitbull down. But because of that one incident both of her parents lost both their dogs and their daughter got a nasty bite in her face. Another case where this dog has never shown any sign of aggression....before it did.

Our federal government needs to formally declare pit bulls (and mixes) to be dangerous weapons and if a child is bitten then the owners should face criminal (not just civil) charges.

That’s how these dogs always are. So sweet, until they’re not.

So what is the appeal of these dog for the average family person? They don’t even look cute.

It sounds like a lot of shelters just flat out lie about their guessed heritage, so I would guess some don’t know what they have/don’t want to think about it, or if they do know what they’re getting, they don’t believe that pit bulls are as dangerous as advertised (the group that thinks they’re nanny dogs, for example), or if they do, they like what it says about them. They might like that they think it says that they can handle such a creature.

Family's pet pitbull attacks a 15 month old child. The child had to be hospitalized, and is in critical condition.

I often see them labeled as lab mixes or as boxers in rescue group pages so I do think many don’t know they are getting a pitt mix. I had a friend that was very into Pit bull rescue and she subscribed to the new that they were being unfairly targeted based on their breed. I think some of them feel like it’s sort of “racist” to oppose a particular breed so they see themselves as proponents of a misunderstood and maligned group of animals that needs their protection.

"The owners of a pair of dogs that killed a child last month and badly injured her mother are asking the Town of Garner to let their animals return home."

Not only are those dogs still alive, the owner wants them back and to keep them as pets. These dogs killed a little girl and mauled her mother, how is this even a question? They should have been destroyed that day!! These specific dogs are zero mistake animals, even one mistake (such as letting it accidentally slip through the front door), has a very real possibility of leading to another person's death. They do not belong in the hands of the general public, or at a rescue, or at a sanctuary, or anywhere else. The only thing those dogs need is a nice, long dirt nap.

People with their pit bulls in harnesses dragging them all over the park. And so proud of themselves.

A pitbull in Long Island pulled away from its owner, who was walking it on a leash, to attack a little girl that was riding a bike. When the dad stepped in to protect his daughter, the pitbull mauled his leg. The owner grabbed his dog, told the father the would be right back, but instead left the scene. Another example of an owner that cares more about owning a dangerous animal, than the safety of other people. Another zero mistake animal that needs a nice, long dirt nap.

12 year old Michigan boy was playing outside with his 2 little sisters, his little brother, and some other kids this past Monday afternoon. A couple of loose pitbulls ran towards the children, and this brave 12 year old stepped in between them and the dogs, so the little ones would have a chance to run for safety. The dogs mauled his leg so badly, it looked to the other children like "guts were coming out of his leg." The child was rushed to the hospital where he underwent surgery to reconstruct his leg. He is now home on crutches, and faces a long recovery while his parents deal with huge medical bills.

Maybe the owners of these pitbulls don't have their own children, but that sure didn't protect the children in the neighborhood. Zero mistake dogs, dogs that are likely to maul or kill a child if you accidentally drop a leash or they slip out the front door, have no place in society, even if the owners themselves do not have children.

The owner needs to be in jail.

any dog can bite. Only some dogs can kill when they bite. I'm fine with a pitbull ban -- you have many other choices with 0 risk of death.
