So sad. I was coming here to post this but you beat me to it. |

A pitbull attacked a 46 year old man, in Big Spring Texas. The dog pulled the man up and down the sidewalk, mauling him so bad that he later died. Several neighbors tried pulling the dog off the man, by hitting it with sticks and even throwing a tire at it. The pit bull did bite one of the neighbors trying to help the victim. The dog was relentless in its determination to maul this man. That is two people, a 46 year old man and a 1 month old baby, killed by two different pitbulls in one day. |
A different pitbull in another state killed another man today. Just so horrible and sad. It is crazy that pit bulls and bully mixes are the most accessible dogs to the public right now, whether through back yard breeders, rescues, or shelters. |
These things are VERY dependent on breeding practices. There was a period in the U.S. in the 20th century when German Shepherds were very in-bred, and there were a lot of problems with attacks and human bites. Responsible breeders and the AKC really tamped down on the breeding practices, and it seems like German Shepherds sort of fell out of favor with the crazy people who breed dogs for meanness. I still would not recommend a GS for anyone that isn't committed to careful training and committed to vetting the breeder appropriately to make sure they really breed for temperament. A well bred and well trained German is a great dog -- smart, loyal, very trainable, and VERY CONSISTENT when trained. But I am sure that there are other countries where Germans are still bred for meanness and aggression -- no way in h** would I take a rescue German from another country where one didn't know anything about the breeder. The problem with Pitts is that I don't think there have been any responsible breeders for generations, or maybe ever (since they were initially bred for a purpose that I don't consider responsible). The only people purposely breeding pitts at this point are crazy people breeding for undesirable traits, and the rescues most people get are either those dogs, who have eventually been let loose, or the offspring of those dogs mixed with other dogs that may or may not be crazy/mean. I've seen some studies that show that other dogs bit more children -- but the question isn't really how many people a dog bites, but how many the dog really injures. Major Biden got sent back to Delaware for "biting" but apparently he didn't even break the skin. Soft-mouthed gun dogs may bite out of excitement or fear if they are poorly trained, but they rarely do any real damage. A dog that bites because it gets scared -- and is trying to just back the human off -- is really different that a dog that bites because it has an impulse to hunt or go on the offense. It seems like it's the latter problem with Pitts -- they will attack a dog or human that is just walking by, minding its own business. Very few dogs do that. |
The father is wanted for arson--lighting a fire on someone's porch--in the hours after the baby was killed. I wonder if the house he lit on fire has some connection to the dog? |

I was mauled by my neighbor’s Doberman when I was 5. I was terrified of dogs for years. We had dogs - mutts - and they were the only dogs I could be around.
I have 2 dogs now. Both mutts. One is small and not remotely pit (some sort of beagle mix). The other had a mom that looked like a lab, but he most likely has some pit in him. He looks a lot like a Rhodesian ridgeback.
We crate him when guests come over. He is very sweet to people he knows, but very protective when strangers are around. He’s got a massive head and jaw that can do some serious damage. Best not to have a problem with him reacting to a guest, so away he goes. |
Exactly. My child was bitten by a chocolate lab when he was a toddler - one of the most "child friendly" breeds out there - so I know and understand that any breed can bite. But the difference is that that lab snapped once (classic case of a 2-ft-tall child being in the wrong place when the old/mostly-blind dog freaked over something unrelated) and then slunk back with its tail down. A Pitt would not have backed off after one bite. They can be super friendly ... until they aren't. |
We had a Rhodesian Ridgeback for 10 years. She was the best dog and slept with us. Never aggressive. However, she was never allowed around my young grandchildren alone. Not taking a chance. She was 85 pounds. |

These attacks do not include the mauling of several people. They do not include the countless attacks pitbulls inflict on other animals, such as carriage horses ( https://toofab.com/2021/04/07/carriage-driver-trampled-as-pitbull-attacks-horse-in-wild-video/ ), dogs in their own back yard ( https://www.counton2.com/news/local-news/dorchester-county-news/two-dogs-mauled-by-group-of-pit-bulls-in-summerville-neighborhood/ ), and dogs being walked by their owners ( https://www.tapinto.net/towns/sutton-place-slash-lenox-hill/sections/law-and-justice/articles/harlem-couple-s-dog-fatally-attacked-by-pit-bull ). These don't include the maulings from this year, where the victims survived, or killings from last year, or the past 10 years. The problem is, pit bulls were bred to fight. These dogs are doing exactly what they are being bred to do, attack without warning and hang on until its opponent is dead. Rescues are encouraging people to bring more of these animals into the community, when they act as though it is normal to have a pet dog that wants to kill other dogs or to have a dog that is dangerous around children. That is normal for a household to have a few pet dogs that must be kept separate, crated and rotated, so they don't kill each other. That is is adorable for a dog to need a home with "single women only please", because it is so reactive towards men it will maul them. There is no possible place for these dogs to exist. Where does a dog that wants to kill other dogs live? In the city, where every walk is a danger, where if it gets loose it will kill the neighbor's pet in its own backyard? In the country, where it can attack the neighbor's livestock and harass horses? Where does a dog that is dangerous towards children live? In an "adult only house", next door to, across the street from, a family with children? What happens when the kids are playing on the front lawn, and that dog slips through the open front door? It used to be that a dog that attacked a child or harassed other animals relentlessly was "brought out behind the barn", where the problem was solved. Now these dogs have their own lobbies in the government, that work to convince people that this is normal, safe dog ownership. https://www.nationalpitbullvictimawareness.org/pit-bull-lobby/ We are allowing the recuses, shelters, and pit bull lobby groups to create a dangerous world for innocent children and pets, and ultimately allowing them to destroy the special relationship that people have cultivated with dogs for thousands of years. People domesticated dogs to create a partnership and bring enjoyment to our lives, not to hurt our children and pets. |
Blah blah blah. Pit bull lobby groups? Seriously? |
Wondering why this matters? Would you be able to stop the dog or totally predict it? This baby was being held while it was attacked. |
This is so well written! I agree with a lot of this. |
What rescue do you know that adequately assesses a person for power breed ownership? Several spout the line "There are no bad dogs, only bad owners." and subscribe to the "Pitties in Pajamas" mentality. Perhaps the above poster was a bit extreme in describing the group of pit bull enthusiasts as a lobby; however, the Humane Rescue Alliance has made it its mission to proliferate pitbulls in the DC area and overturn the BSL in PG County. When the head of a large rescue in a community believes these dogs should be in every home, I would say it could be consider a lobby - not to the government - but to the people. https://www.humanerescuealliance.org/blog/posts/pitbull-bans-have-no-place-in-a-humane-community |
We all know of people (or know them personally) who claim that “pitties” are just the sweetest dogs ever, just misunderstood. When the breed is responsible for multiple unprovoked fatal attacks, I don’t think we need to jolly them along in their delusions. |
Yep, cue the Facebook pics of pit bulls with their tiny children. “Pitties are the best nanny dogs!!!” No. |
