A 3 year old pitbull mauled its two owners in a hotel room, in Pa. Both owners had to be airlifted to the hospital after the attack.

Just from the link you posted I found this story from June https://www.fox43.com/article/news/local/dauphin-county/middletown-dog-attack-police-investigation/521-ffcbdb5d-d67e-4700-8714-857e91f97c5b of two pit bulls who mauled two dogs (one of whom has since died), plus another story from 2019 that talks about a “short stocky” dog that attacked another dog (and one more story about a dog that bit someone in the face, breed unknown, but let’s be real here: it was likely a pit bull). All in this area of Pennsylvania.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of any other breed ever attacking like this.

The rescues have to know these dogs are all pit mixes, or they shouldn't be working with animals. This is part of the problem. Labeling these dogs as "boxer mixes" and "hound mixes" allows people to skirt breed restrictions in apartment complexes, and provide false information to their home/rental insurance companies. The rescue claims they do their "best to provide accurate and complete information about our adoptable animals", but that is not true. They know what breeds they are adopting out, and they know why pitbull mixes are constantly misidentified as something else when very rarely is an actual lab or hound dog mistakenly identified as a pitbull.

That “retriever mix” is especially egregious.

I'm glad to see others here just as passionate about the dangers of pitbulls as I am.

There is a website called dogsbite.org that anyone interested in breed specific legislation should check out. If you have the stomach for it, there is an archive of the victims of fatal putbull attacks.

In the last 8 years, there have been 28.4 deaths per year attributed to pitbullls.

There is absolutely zero reason they should be allowed to live among humans. Zero.

What makes a pitbull so dangerous cannot be mitigated be any means. Their "gameness" has been bred into them and is what makes them dangerous because they do not feel pain in a normal way, they refuse to let go once they latch on (it's not necessarily a stronger jaw), and many of them have hair trigger reactivity.

There are so many wonderful breeds out there that this one needs to die out. Our neighbors recently got a pitbull/boxer mix and my daughter is no longer allowed to play in their yard. It's just unnecessary risk.

Laws need to be passed to stop the breeding of these animals. And it has to happen quickly. Too many people and especially children are dying, while people are allowed to breed dogs like this:

I don't know why they are not being banned. It's a pretty safe move, politically. The nutcases who defend pitbulls are on the fringe of both parties, so it's not really a political issue. The VAST majority of voters on both sides support banning them.

It would probably need to be done at the federal level to have any impact though, right?

As a person who is interested in getting a dog, how would you recommend avoiding pit mixes? It’s really hard to tell with puppies, right? Rescue orgs obviously don’t know or care if their dogs are pit bull mix.

maybe there's a DNA test?

maybe there's a DNA test?

A mixed breed dog is just a dog. It isn't purposely bred for anything. It is random which traits it will inherit/express. It seems unnecessary to reject a mixed dog because it might or might not have some pitbull ancestry. If you want a guarantee, don't adopt from a rescue, they will not likely know parentage and certainly aren't doing genetic testing. You will have to get a pedigreed dog with known bloodlines. This will not guarantee a nice temperament, but, it will guarantee genetics.

https://www.kwtx.com/2021/07/01/central-texas-woman-arrested-after-pitbull-named-diablo-attacks-child-8-woman-69/

A woman in Texas was arrested and charged because her pitbull attacked an 8 year old child and a 69 y/o woman. The dog was already named on a prior warrant, for biting someone else. The owner lied to the authorities, claimed the pitbull was already dead, and allowed it to be around an 8 y/0 and 10 y/o. The dog did not have a rabies vaccine, or other vaccines, and no one took the child to the doctor for medical treatment after the bite occurred.

What is it about pitbulls that seem to attract the worst owners as well as people that care more about a dog than the well being and safety of a human child?

Voters repealed the breed ban laws in Denver, because no owner thinks their pit bull is going to be a problem:

Pretty liberal here, and absolutely support a ban of this breed, unequivocally.

Ooohhh! I want that pointer lab mix. Bella looks perfect!

I don’t think Bella looks like a pit mix but reactive on leash and not good with kids does not sound like a perfect dog. Definitely a project. One problem with these projects is that DINKs get them, but then when they have kids, the dog is often then living a very restricted life.
