I am not convinced he even personally believed half the stuff he said. He said those things primarily to gain and keep an audience. He is greatly responsible for the angry, hateful “us vs. them” mentality that defines the modern American approach to politics. He spent his entire career actively and deliberately making the country a worse place, all to line his own pockets and boost his ego.

When I was making $40,000 annually, that would have been $8. Nobody would laud me for that sacrifice, but they would him -- solely because he made a lot of money for the shock value of the ugly parts out loud. And the tax break on $100,000 provides a lot of personal financial incentive that will never come with a $8 donation.

That's worth looking up to, apparently.

Republicans are obsessed with telling us not to believe any of the horrible things that various Republicans have said. I don’t know if it’s just some disbelief that their political heroes are godawful, or if it’s more of their insane belief that we’re too stupid to be trusted, but it doesn’t say anything good about them.

Not a one of these “conservatives” (aka anti-democratic reactionaries) has tried to refute a single one of the god awful quotes from the sewer’s own mouth because they know he’s just that awful and that’s why they love him.

He said what they think but were afraid to speak aloud.
