Young House Love - wtf is going on with Sherry?

Anonymous
I haven't been a devoted follower but since I grew up in Richmond, I used to sporadically check out the blog. Years ago, after their home goods line launched, I recall them saying they were slowing down the blogging as they wanted to protect more of their personal life. I figured their home line, books, etc. was a legit business and they had gotten too big to need to depend on the blog.

What happened since? Do they still have a home line? Did they run into money troubles maybe? I agree that FL house is a weird choice for people who love house design.

I think she got too close with Sean the contractor out in Cape Charles, and that was the same summer she was walking all over Cape Charles in nothing but a bikini. Then they went on a trip to Costa Rica in January, and she decided she wanted to live in the tropics. I feel bad for the kids.

Tell me more about this contractor and walking around in a bikini? Is it not that kind of town or was she just showing off? Do you think they had an affair and then they had to move out of the area to save their marriage?

I thought they dropped KB when she blew herself up with the whole "crack house" thing over on her blog.

I think this was it. It has been discussed in a different forum, it seems like they separated after that

What? Can someone explain this to me? I followed them years ago. What does the crack house thing mean? What happened?

This was back in 2018 when they were redoing the duplex. Sherry lost weight doing keto and was feeling herself. Cape Charles, VA is on the eastern shore of VA and is a sleepy family town. Not the kind of place where a mom in her late 30s wanders about town in a bikini taking selfies.

No way.

Have you been watching her "rearrange furniture" for their sitting area next to the kitchen? It's basically an entry way at best with mini furniture that belongs in a college dorm.

I understand the desire to downsize, but usually when people do, they downsize to something smaller but nicer or equally as nice. They've downsized and seriously down-graded. It's weird. There has to be something else going on behind the scenes.

It's just so bizarre that they didn't put their bedroom upstairs and instead took a perfectly good living room, walled it off, and turned it into a bedroom. And now the drama with "we can't put a fireplace there because it's against code to have a ventless fireplace in the bedroom." First, what kind of a moron removes a chimney, and second, IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE A LIVING ROOM. So dumb. This house is a disaster.

The crystal candle thing they rigged up to replace the fake logs was behind ridiculous. They need to move to a bigger house so they can get back to what they are good at. I think it will be soon, they already admitted to having dropped their plans to add a master closet and bath.

Wait, why are they not doing the master bath project? I must have missed that announcement.

It is so weird how they used to post to Instagram regularly and now they have not posted in three months, although Sherry does do stories… Don’t they want to promote their posts and other things? The whole thing is really very odd

They both have other jobs! I think that's been made clear. They do advertising free lance work, that they can pick up more of to make ends meet. The blog/influencer side is probably 1 full time job on top of that, that they share. So they are clearly paring down the influencer side. There is only so much to share! And there kids are doing virtual school, so are home all the time.

Anyhow, I think they'll move to a bigger place too. We'll see!

The weird part, especially for those who have been following them for years, is that they were open for years that the blog was Sherry's full time gig and other stuff was on the side. Later John quit his job and the blog was also his full time gig. Up until they moved from Richmond, it really seemed that this hadn't changed. They did regular blog posts, podcasts, and IG posts. Sherry posted endless IG stories. Then post-move it all stopped. When questioned Sherry replied that they had always had full time jobs and nothing had changed. It seemed like such gaslighting. For people who share their whole life on the internet, it was bizarre thar they refused to acknowledge the shift. They certainly don't owe the internet an in depth explanation, but it would have been normal to share that post-move they've shifted their time to other priorities for now and will be blogging on a reduced schedule. It's just so Trumpian to pretend that nothing has changed. Bizarre.

Uh no. They stopped blogging all together for awhile. Why? By they decided they didn’t want to blog their family life anymore, and that took half their content away. They gradually came back, only focused on design, less kid stuff. They made it clear the. That they had other jobs. It’s never been a secret, but they don’t talk about it by I bet their clients don’t want them yammering about projects on IG stories.

What’s weird is that you think it’s a conspiracy haha. They freelance AND do some influencing. Now, it seems mostly freelance. I bet they’ll be back next year when the kids can go to school.

They're such a lovely family and I'm enjoying the journey they've shared with us -- paring back blogging to have room for freelance advertising work and a more balanced family life, downsizing, moving to an amazing climate. I would reduce my house footprint by half any day if it meant I got that huge 2nd story deck and could walk to a gorgeous beach. I do not get the haters and conspiracy theorists at all.

Stumbled upon this thread after googling to find the location of the FL house. All I have to say is wow, DC urban moms seem kind of cruel...maybe that’s why they moved

PS: Give some grace to the OG. Jon and Sherry have been sharing their lives for 8+ years...what mom doesn’t need a break in 2020?!

I just kind of miss their old content, back when they were starting out, and they give good DIY tutorials. For a while I was feeling bad about myself that they were always able to shop around and spend so little on projects, but then I realized that (at that point) it was their full time job and I had a different 50 hour a week office distraction that made it difficult to have the same amount of time to invest in such things.

That said, the layout of their current house is awful, and the more time they spend trying to justify the less I believe anything they write. Also, some of their aesthetic choice are just not realistic for me or the nicest anymore. Everything’s all white it looks uncomfortable for daily living or looks cheep like it’s from Hobby Lobby or something.

As such, I’m not a regular follower anymore.

I’ve always appreciated their budget saavy and minimalist approach. Despite having just moved from a large house, I feel like they have always lived pretty simply so the down size to a beach home wasn’t that surprising to me. Heck, some bloggers have downsized to an RV! They definitely are not as DIY as the past, but probably have enough income from other outlets that theyve moved into a new phase of life.

I still enjoy them. And have always been pleasantly surprised by their responsiveness to their followers!

Richmond isn’t a DC suburb.

Really can't believe the haters on here. I thoroughly enjoy Sherry and John and do not find either of them annoying or their new house ugly. If it bothers you so much why not just stop following them? Clearly you're drawn to them or else you wouldn't be so interested in the personal details of their lives.

To me this is a couple that has integrity and principles in an Instagram world where everyone is trying to shove a product down our throats. They are not chasing sponsors, trying to sell us dumb shit they get paid to promote, or trying to get a million social media followers like a lot of other grammers out there piss and moan about. Case in point: YHL is the ONLY home blogger I know that has given consistent attention to BIPOC business owners and bloggers since everyone hopped on that bandwagon in June to preserve their reputations and fell off shortly thereafter bc people stopped caring.

Y'all really need to stop -- especially going after their kids by saying they don't get out much and live a sheltered life. How dare you? I would have killed to have as much attention and affection they show their kids when I was growing up.

And yes, we are kinda mean on DCUM. At least most people here when you meet them in real life keep their crap to themselves. But here, it’s a free for all.

Looks like Sherry found DCUM! Hi!
