That's the direction this world is going in, and kids being brought up in the age of social media need to understand that. It wasn't true 30 years ago, but it's true now, and kids will have to adjust. I personally think that if kids spent less time spewing racist/anti-Semitic bile, we would all be better off, |
This. Such manufactured outrage over a teenager who did himself in by ranting violent thoughts about jews and N*******. As someone pointed out upthread, kids in Florida can be sent to prison as they can be tried as adults. Now, that is a tragedy. |
Now explain the racism and virulent misogyny. He Kyle also Black and female? |
So, when you are 17 years old and applying for college... what should they judge you on? the last year only of your life? Actually most college have a 3 year rule that Harvard broke when they rescinded an offer to a girl who killed her mom.. she was 13 when it happened. |
Look, the flip side to being a high profile person is that your stuff gets more attention. So this kid decided to become a conservative pundit who advocated for gun rights and joined controversial right wing groups, and hung out with Trump and Melania. He built himself a pretty big platform. The good thing about having a big platform is opportunities open up to you, and you get to have some influence on causes you believe in. You get into Harvard! The bad thing about having a big platform is that people dig into your past to look for stuff and then write newspaper articles about it. The easy way to be able to say dumb stuff as a teenager is not to go be a big time public figure, with all the attendant opportunities that comes with it. But once you go out and become a public figure, you have to understand that things you've done may be excavated - and if one of the things you've done is say horrible things in order to be provocative and offensive with your friends, then you'd better d*mn well have a good explanation. You'd better be prepared to help people see why these don't disqualify you from the glories that you thought were yours. By and large, people don't care about the dumb things that most people have said and done. Those who open themselves up to the public eye are in a different situation. I would say this story is somewhat comparable to Trump's defense sec nominee - whose domestic violence allegations probably would have stayed pretty quiet had he not accepted the nomination: https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/trumps-defense-nominee-addresses-violent-incident-between-ex-wife-son-amid-fbi-vetting-process/2019/06/18/e46009de-190b-11e9-a804-c35766b9f234_story.html?utm_term=.499b6a624bde You can avoid a lot of your past by not walking out on the public stage. If you do walk out on the public stage, people will care what you've done. |
That is wrong too. Back to original topic. If people do not stand up and say kids say horrible things and there is a reason why a record is expunged at 18 then it is a huge issue for majority of parents. Lots of self righteous folk. This all makes me cringe-anyone who says my kid would never is clueless |
| I suspect he’s a phony with no real convictions, just exploiting the right wing niche for fame and attention (and $$?). Typical narcissist twerp. Go study at Liberty U, kid. |

9:17 poster here.
Given the threat of violence, and assuming that the threats posted in an earlier link are true and were made by the student in question, I change my position on this. Hate speech is one thing that I will defend, even if I find what is being said to be offensive, but I will not defend threats of violence. That is not "civil discourse." That said, I do think that many so-called liberal institutions which claim to support the free exchange of ideas are quick to try to silence any ideas that might be considered to be offensive to someone. They miss the idea that free-speech is a double-edge sword: in order to retain it, we must defend the right of others to speak at all times, even when what they say is disagreeable or, indeed, offensive. We do not arrive at a free society by picking and choosing what others may or may not say. |
I'm fine with that and would still go to Harvard like I did *cough* *too many* years ago. I'm old. |

TRUMP SUPPORTERS ARE BOYCOTTING HARVARD
I REPEAT: TRUMP SUPPORTERS ARE BOYCOTTING HARVARD Related news: Harvard sees no discernible difference. |
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! That would be like me saying I’m boycotting sex with Keanu Reeves. |
Ehhh. They were welcoming "ideas" that many find offensive - this kid is affiliated with the NRA at a time that many consider that offensive; he is pals with Trump. It was his expression of racial animosity that got him kicked out. That's not an idea - that is more like a verbal punch in the nose. |
Wait. What record is expunged at 18? And what, pray tell, would you like colleges to base their admissions on, if they're not allowed to count whatever happens before you're 18? |

Things conservatives don’t have empathy for: poor people, hungry children, gay and trans folk, immigrants, people without health insurance, asylum seekers, pregnant people.
People who conservatives have empathy for: racist antiSemitic white boys who Harvard rejects. ?? |
