My understanding is they asked for an explanation of the comments and he sent a letter apologizing and saying he regrets the comments. He said they were abhorrent.

Sometimes saying sorry isn't enough to magically wash away the racism.

Not sure who Ben Shapiro is hanging out with, but every kid I know could meet the standard of not threatening to kill people of another religion on social media.

Apologizing after you've been caught just so you can still go to harvard doesn't make him a victim. his life isn't ruined. he can go somewhere else next year (Univ of Alabama!) and still have plenty of options to succeed in life wherever fox news will have him.

Context is everything - Northham denies being in the racist picture, though he admitted dressing like Micheal Jackson - in the very early 1980's.
Kashuv used the N word last year.

I'm not trying to defend Northam - I'm actually shocked he's still in office - but another difference is that there is a way to deal with Northam: you vote him out next time. There's no comparable way for the public to exact a consequence in the case of the kid who wasn't bright enough not to make videos of himself being a racist when he was about to apply for college.

It might also have something to do with the fact that his apology letter to Harvard was less than honest. He said the comments were made "a few years ago" in order to distance himself from them, when in reality many were made less than two years ago, in late 2017 and early 2018.
