Harvard gets videos of an admitted candidate using racials slurs online, and rescinds his admission. Good for them!

Kids are supposedly admitted based on a close assessment of their actions/records from grades 9-12.* It shouldn’t be a shock when negative parts of that record have consequences.
*And an assessment of other factors, including whether their parents were wealthy/smart/prescient enough to have attended the same school a generation earlier. |
|
Kyle Kashuv used the n-word when he was 16 and now his Harvard acceptance has been rescinded.
Ralph Northam dressed in blackface as an adult and he is still governor. That tells you everything you need to know about how the rules are applied in our society. |

When someone is say 30 or 40 or whatever, saying they were immature at 16 and said stupid things for which they were deeply regretful is one thing.
When someone is 18 and said stupid stuff at 16 and offer no apology or reflection - that is something else entirely. |
+1 Gotta wonder about the psychology of a kid who sees 34 of his classmates and teachers getting gunned down, and his first instinct is to campaign for the NRA. |
+1. The fact that a PP can't see the difference between these two things says alot about them and their personal social or political agenda. |
| I live in fear of my DS saying racially insensitive things ... because he's 6 and has HFA. Sixteen is OLD ENOUGH to know better, and to be saying those words with intention. |
My understanding is they asked for an explanation of the comments and he sent a letter apologizing and saying he regrets the comments. He said they were abhorrent. |
|
He was taking a gap year anyway. He will be fine and make this a cause celebre (already underway online).
The remarks were bad enough. Leaving them out there on social media when applying to college, especially if they "no longer reflect your views,": is just dumb. And if wantonly throwing about the n-word and worse was so commonplace to you at age 16 that you don't remember it...I am not sure how sorry you are. I think you're sorry you got caught. |
| It’s so gross how he tries to play the Parkland card to get out of this. It would be one thing if he said these things shortly after the shooting when he was traumatized, depressed, suffering from PTSD, etc., and thus was acting out of character. But he did these things before he shooting, and now basically says he shouldn’t suffer any consequences because he was present for the shooting. |
Context is everything - Northham denies being in the racist picture, though he admitted dressing like Micheal Jackson - in the very early 1980's. Kashuv used the N word last year. |
+1. |

Republicans don't think there should be any ramifications for racist acts.
That is "free speech." Sorry buddy, you have the right to say and do as you please, but there might be fallout from it, like having to change you college plans. Liberty U will be happy to have you. |
it works both ways he will become an even greater republican activist after this. PC culture keeps adding to Trumps foot soldiers |
Well, no it doesn't. Harvard is a private institution trying to form a student body and has every right to reject deviants. Kyle Kashuv is a waste of space and should have been aborted. Northam is a governor, but there's no mechanism for recalling him over this. At least he can't have a second term. His political career is over. |
