Chevy Chase MD - What's so great about it?

Anonymous
No homeless or begging, the classic WASP private school/country club life style while still able to have urban proximity. Most other cities you have to go further out to get stuff like a private police force and elite country club. Also not we are beholden to the Montgomery planning commission so there isn’t ever going to be affordable housing in the nice parts. Yes I know there is some near silver spring but that’s not what people mean by Chevy Chase

Small, cramped, outdated houses on tiny lots, houses crammed too close together, impossibly narrow streets, excessive noise from both Connecticut Ave and Brookville Rd, not walkable to metro, subpar public high school.....all adds up to not so great at all.

We moved to Chevy Chase from Shaw DC primarily for proximity to good schools (currently private for fit but will switch at some point). It’s lovely. Wel-kept homes and yards that are not ostentatious. Quiet, yet close to the metro and very convenient to all kinds of shopping. Close to the beltway, but not too close. Lots of families with young kids. Not as much racial diversity as I’d like (we’re Asian) but there is good international diversity.
I like that I almost never get crime alerts any more and the few I’ve seen aren’t violent.
We are not into the country club set (probably would be turned down, haha) but I suppose if you were, there’s plenty of them here!

If you had ever been the CC you would know that that is not the majority of CC.

Calling PP an asshole doesn’t change the fact that he/she is right. LOL. Defensive much?

Small, cramped, outdated houses: That depends. Some of the houses are quite large, and many of the houses either have been updated or have features that age well. Some fit that profile.

Tiny lots: Yes, the lots are smaller. It's the trade-off people make given how expensive the land is there.

Houses crammed too close together: Not much different than what you get if you build a bigger house on a bigger lot.

Impossibly narrow streets: This forces people to drive slower. Of course, sometimes you end up with cars double-parked that makes navigation difficult.

Excessive noise: No different than living near other major roads in DC, MD, or VA.

Not walkable to Metro: Depends on location. Somerset is walkable to Metro; other parts of CC are not.

Subpar public high school: You can reach this conclusion only if you have a thing against children who are not white or Asian

Adds up to not that great: So you say, but the average sales price for single-family homes in the B-CC district over the past year is the highest in the DC suburbs (higher than Whitman, Churchill, Langley, McLean, Yorktown).

I would live in Chevy Chase in a heartbeat if I could afford it. Nice homes, quiet streets, great schools, close to DC. What's not to like?

The complete lack of racial diversity, for a start.

+1 Somerset and Chevy Chase West are fairly easy walks to the Bethesda and FH metros. BCC has a higher great schools rating than Whitman, and it's far more diverse. As for outdated houses, not everyone is the McMansion type. We were city dwellers and would rather have a good location than 4000 square plus so I could have a "crafting room".

Going back to the original posts, these are the most expensive DC suburban high school districts for single-family homes over the past 12 months:

1. B-CC (Bethesda)
2. Langley (McLean)
3. Whitman (Bethesda)
4. Churchill (Potomac)
5. George Mason (Falls Church)
6. McLean (McLean)
7. Yorktown (Arlington)
8. Washington-Lee (Arlington)
9. Madison (Vienna)
10. Oakton (Vienna)

Of the top 10, the only one with more diversity than B-CC is W-L in Arlington.

You must be dirt poor, not sure why you are hating on CC as there isn't much to hate on unless you couldn't afford it...

And the overcrowded, on top of each other feeling. I don't want to pay $2 mil and be able to see in my neighbor's windows (and vice versa). YMMV.
