This Is Us -- Season 2

Another PP mentioned this and it's so true: I hate how the characters describe what's going on in their conversation. Something like, "You know tonight we're flying out to California to see Kevin perform his last episode of The Manny, and everyone will be meeting us there, right?" As if they wouldn't have had a logistics conversation some time prior to leaving for the airport. It's just such a lazy and amateurish way to write dialogue. I'm becoming disappointed in this show that I used to really like.

I never picked up on this, but now I won't be able to ignore it.

They are withholding information about his death for no reason that relates to the show. If his death was a mystery and the characters were trying to figure it out too it would be fine. I think I'm going to record them and binge watch once the season is over so I will not be annoyed if they don't tell us what happened to him this season.

A thousand times yes! I can't remember what it was but there was another very blatant example of this in the last episode, it really made me pause and think, 'wow what terrible writing'.

I think Jack commits suicide. I hope I'm wrong but here are the clues:

1. Remember the random scene at Randall's holiday party where he talks the guy off the ledge. Randall told him that his kids will always forgive him as long as he's around to be forgiven.

2. Kate was really bothered by Toby's suicide attempts and it's one of the first questions she asks him when they start getting to know each other better.

3. Kevin said he threw away all the model airplanes he and Jack made because he was so angry after his dad's death.

I've been sitting on this idea for awhile. I really hope I'm wrong but all foreshadowing seems to point to it.

I had the same thought when he gave Kevin his necklace at the end of the episode. It looked like Jack was saying goodbye to him. I forgot about those other points you made... I think this is the correct answer.

I don't think it was suicided. How would Jack's suicide be Kate's fault?

Maybe it was suicide but Rebecca never told the kids? She told them he died some other way so he wouldn't be "ruined" in their eyes. And Kate manages to make it be her fault.

Np. Kate internalizes everything and is super sensitive. She'd likely find a way to believe it was her fault regardless of the circumstances.

+1 I like this theory, too. We also know that Jack was having a really hard time battling his addiction the second time around, which has thrown him for a loop.

This season is definitely off to a slow start for me. This past episode had its moments but in general I sat there thinking "so when does something happen?" I get that in a first season there's so much more background to reveal but this season is crawling for me. And I'm entirely over Kate and, by extension, Toby.

PP here. I don't think they did this in the first season, but they've been employing this "tactic" (?) so far in the second season. It's SO annoying! Like we're too dumb to figure it out on our own.

OMG! Can you imagine if they drag it out for another season??

Oh dear, please no, then it gets stale. I think we will find out toward the end of this season but not AT the end hopefully.

No, they can't! I told DH about the suicide theory, I don't want it to be true but he's now convinced there's no other way for Jack to have died.

I find it interesting that they haven't really dealt with how Jack's death affected Rebecca so much, which I think will be an interesting story line. Especially as it relates to how she ended up married to Miguel. One reason why the suicide angle could work. It would give them a lot more material than just a car accident or burned in a fire.
