Which is your IB?

I wonder if people who put together lists like this do any research? Janney (and I suppose this is true for several others on this list) won't even be able to accommodate all the IB kids, they'll likely only going to have room for IB with sibling. Zero chance OOB.

What difference does it make to you? This person could be IB for Shepherd or Hyde and could be playing lottery just to play. Why do you care?

NP. If they are IB for Shepherd or Hyde they better list those schools, instead of those where they have no chance of getting in. If they don't, they'll get in nowhere.

Let me try again. The PP could already be at a school that they like and could just be playing lottery for the sake of playing. I try not to offer opinions on lottery lists unless asked.

I'd think posting your list on this thread is tantamount to asking for opinions. And I'd also assume that they give their full list, but maybe they don't. It just seems pointless to list schools that are absolutely impossible to get in OOB, even if the list has less than 12 and it doesn't cost anything. And what if the PP isn't aware it's impossible? Maybe pointing it out to them will prompt them to add some schools that can actually serve as backups to their IB? You'd be surprised to see how many people play the lottery without even understanding the basics of it.

Then offer advice, don't just say things like "I wonder if these people do any research." I am in a charter that we live and would only leave for a Deal feeder. Every year since PK4, our list has looked like that. People do different things for different reasons. Best not to assume.

I offered information and expressed my bewilderment, which, yes, implied some judgment. Has that ever happened on DCUM? When someone does something that makes absolutely no sense and posts about it, then they need to be ready for someone to react to it.

It makes absolutely no sense TO YOU!! You should have stopped at first sentence. Next time just ask questions if you're bewildered.

And by the way, I did ask a question. I asked if lists like this are based on any research.

NP. You sound unhinged. I know lottery season can be stressful. It's ok. Chill and have a glass of wine. You asked a rhetorical question (like "what are you thinking?"). Fact is, you could have asked clarifying questions. Fwiw, our lottery list looks almost identical. We are at a HRCS that we LOVE but may move WOTP soon so decided to play a free lottery ticket (knowing it will be a dud). No harm, no foul.

NP here, I don't think she sounds unhinged. Perhaps you are reading way to much into the posters words. Sounds like you are taking the lottery a bit seriously yourself.

Also, PS, the "chill and have a glass of wine" just makes you sound like a 40 year old blonde head. This isn't IRC, use the internet in a real way - /vent

Wow, you must be un-hinged's cousin. Forget the wine, you need weed! You know it's legal now? Funny that PP came back to say she was IB for Eaton afterall so un-hinged's berating and unsolicited "advice" was for nothing. All she has to do from the start was ask a clarifying question like "are you IB to any of those?"

First "unhinged" PP here ( ). Sounds like you really need some weed, might help with your high-strung rage. I got my answer, apparently people list zero-chance schools knowingly just for the heck of it. It's ok, you do what you want. No need for that much vitriol. Have a blessed night and good luck with the lottery!

You got your answer pages ago. It was said at least 2-3 times that people throw in picks for the heck of it then you continued to press. What rage do you see from my responses? PS I am not the most recent "DP" poster. I think you're the only one showing rage in any posts and it's all because you can't imagine anyone playing the lottery in the controlled manner that you think everyone should subscribe to. I truly have no rage in me. I came on here to tell you to let it go and some people waste picks but who cares. Anyway, if saying "have a blessed day" is your way of showing you have control and have zero rage, I will say the same to you

Not playing lottery. We are in an older grade at one the schools PP posted (almost in middle). I come on these threads to offer advice (when asked) or comfort posters like you or others that seem to be stressing.

This is how you "comfort" people? Yikes.

I think this is why there is so much lottery stress, people like you returning to "help"

You have a middle schooler and still come back to the lottery thread? First, hasn't it changed so much since you did the lottery and second, don't you have anything better to do?

Unhinged PP here, one last time (and no, the previous responses to your post were not me sockpuppeting - there's clearly other posters taken aback by the level of personal vitriol). Just for the record, I don't have any rage because of how anyone is playing the lottery. I really do not care as it does not affect me, which doesn't mean I can't question something that seems nonsensical to me (and posting your list is asking for comments). I did let myself get drawn into this argument by the emotional and nasty responses to my initial question, which led me to justify it, and of course that's always a mistake. Again, good luck in the lottery to all still playing it!

I know this is probably already debated, but if my child is in a "decent" school, but my school may move impacting logistics, etc-should we play the lottery? What do I give up, do I give up my child's seat at the current school by entering the lottery or do I simply enter and see what happens. If I dont like my lottery results, can I stay put or have I lost my current seat?

You do not lose your current seat by entering the lottery. The only way you lose it is if you are matched to another school AND you enroll there. Once you enroll you can't change your mind (unless it is you IB and K or above).

Commute and language are drivers for us. We are not concerned about an eventual feeder.

If you're willing to go up to CMI and you value language, I'm surprised you don't have Stokes Spanish on your list. That and Bethune, which is outside of common lottery, are both in Brookland not much farther away than ITS.

We went back and forth on this quite a bit but decided to put a hard stop on 10 minutes of car commute. We noticed once we started creeping it was like "we'll, if we're willing to do 10 why not 15 and if 15 why not 20..."

Or EL Haynes?

How is CMI 10 minutes from Garrison boundary? Have you looked at TR4, Lee or Bruce Monroe? (You say language, but ITS and CMI aren't language schools).

We're on the Northeast edge of the boundary. CMI is about a 9-10 minute drive. TR and Lee are over 15 minutes in morning traffic. The Spanish schools we liked within our radius were prioritized over CMI and ITS. Monroe fell out for a reason that I don't want to dig into here.

Two Rivers is quite a bit further away, but Lee is literally 30 seconds from ITS, just FYI.

Why can't Lee boosters understand that there are some people that don't want to go to Lee? It is not a personal attack on your or your choice. Let it go please.

Huh? WTF are you talking about? I live by both schools and drive past both of them daily. I couldn't care less whether people do or don't want to go to Lee or ITS but they are very close. Two rivers, while a great school is much further away. How is proximity to ITS boosting?

Because PP clarified several posts ago that she didn't choose Lee due to Montessori and people are still arguing about how many tenths of a mile away Lee is and why isn't she choosing it.

No she didn't. Look above. She said it was due to commute

Keep switching 4-9. Not including IB school because we have other options if we don't get a spot anywhere.

Check out Bethune on 16th and Kennedy as well. It seems like you are looking for Spanish and they do 1/2 day in Spanish. Also really small, very active parent community. They have their own lottery.
I *think* Dorothy Height takes all applicants--maybe by policy or by demand, check on that but if it's the case, you might want to move to to #12, unless you truly prefer it over Seaton and Tubman. Neither of those too many (if at all) OOB students. Of the schools listed, which is closest to you? And which schools will be out of your way, commuting wise? That may help with some reordering.

Currently at charter that we like but considering Spanish bi-lingual/immersion (DH native Spanish speaker).

1. Mundo Verde
2. Oyster
3. Stokes
4. DC Bilingual
5. Marie Reed, Spanish (IB)
+LAMB

I guess MV unlikely, and Oyster likely won't take any OOB kids. Thoughts?

Check out Bethune on 16th and Kennedy. We went from a spanish immersion day care to this school, and really liked it. We only left because we got into LAMB. They have their own lottery

With a bad draw, you could easily be unmatched and have sky high waitlist numbers across your choices. Not a single safety. I know you wrote you're fine with staying in daycare; with this list, the odds are more in favor of your daycare.

You will end up with a 50% chance of daycare with this list. Have you considered Langley as a safety? You are wasting CHML and 2R4 at that ranking. I know there are kids from Brookland in my DD's class at Langley.

OP here -- Langley isn't a school I've heard much about but I appreciate the rec and will do some research! I take it you are happy there?

Yes, we are happy there. DD's teacher is excellent and has kept her challenged, and she has peers on her level and several BFFs. The principal is new but doing well. It is a smallish school, which I like, in a very roomy and nice historic building. The school seems to be at the beginning of the standard gentrification process from preschool up, so test scores are pretty bad, but the preschool is fine. We are lotterying selectively and expect to stay next year. It is not 100% certain that you would get in OOB, but it's definitely possible. I think it's a hidden gem.

NP, I work in schools and knew the previous principal of Langley, she was amazing. I don't know the new one but hear really great things. I'd definitely consider it a good bet as an OOB safety.

Breakthrough is most likely moving. An email went out that they are looking at ward 5.

We live in Michigan Park so trying to keep commute close (Breakthrough is the only one over 10 min drive).

Really drawn to montessori and the DCI track schools as is evident in my list. Also prefer not drive all over the city if possible, haha.

I didn't get to the open houses for 8-12. It's really slots 9-12 that I'm struggling with. Also on my list but not here: Sela, 2 Rivers Young, School-Within-School. I didn't get to any of these open houses either except SWS.

I think the new principal is doing a great job. She has tackled some challenging budget and staffing issues and is warm and welcoming but authoritative when needed. I like her a lot. Of course it is a learning curve for a first time principal and the school still needs a lot of work. But I am very happy we have her.

How interested are you in Montessori? You have ranked SSMA high and your chances of getting on are much higher, than, say ITS, which you rank lower. If you really want Montessori I'd rank SSMA and Lee together. (I'd also put Lee first, personally based on what I know of the schools).
