Three Muslims Killed Execution Style in Chapel Hill

Anonymous
Question: if he was muslim (and equally as angry/hateful/unstable) and gunned down 3 promising sweet white kids who were going to be dentists - would anyone question whether it was a hate crime? wouldn't everyone jump to terrorism? even if the muslim guy's wife came out and said, no, wait, it was a dispute over a parking spot?

wouldn't this garner so much more attention?

all my muslim friends have posted about this and not a single other friend. it seems weird to me.

it's horrific gun violence - and makes the case for stricter gun control - but none of my gun control friends seem interested.

i appreciate jeff bringing up issues like this to be discussed and debated. it's sad to me that it didn't become an instant off-topic thread - so, it seems like the senseless death of 3 american muslims is more trivial and less interesting tahn 2 kids who get left in a car for an hour...

So to follow your logic, because it's possible (perhaps likely) that people would immediately assume hate crime if it had been a muslim perpetrator and white victims, we should automatically assume this case is also a hate crime? Yeah.

just that we should apply the same standards to all cases - and question our own logic when we realize it would lead us another pathway if the races were swicthed around. sounds like the fbi is investigating it, based on the guy's FB feed. why does it bother you if it gets investigated as a hate crime?

well there is also his expressed hatred for religious people and the statements from neighbors.

Too many sick people with guns out here.

I think what we all need to come to terms with in our lifetime is that there is A LOT of mental illness around, and we are not yet capable of fully understanding it. I'd say the majority of us have some sort of insecurities that can blow up into a serious problem. We should not have guns in our hands. We are NOT equipped to figure out who can carry a gun responsibly and who will not.

BarenakedIslam has released thousands Barakat's tweets and he was not a good person. His tweets are full of racism, anti-Semitism and pro-jihad. Neither one of these men were good people and I think there was hatred on both sides, one was just a little crazier than the other.

This tragic event at the hands of a lunatic is sad but lest we not forget the hate crime that occurred on 9/11. A lot of people still don't and never will trust Muslims and they have not done much to change a lot of those folk’s minds but they don't harass, beat or kill them. We must be measured in our reaction. To turn this into an outrage circus as the media typically does and make demands to rewrite laws and restrictions on personal liberties for the sake of a "few bad apples" (you know who loves to says that!) is not going to bring these three people back. Europe went this route and it's coming back to bite them.

I can see this turning into something it's not and being blown out of proportion. All deliberate killing is a hate crime but it only comes up when white people do it. Just take a look at how the Fort Hood killings are just another “bad apple" in the eyes of the current administration and media pundits. You can't call this a hate crime without calling the Fort Hood killings the same. That was a terrorist hate crime turned into a simple “bad apple” murder case by the media and current administration. Based on those standards applied to Fort Hood and the rest of the radicals by the current administration, this is nothing more a killing of innocent people by another "bad apple".

That being said I know this is going to turn into an outrage race based circus that will only benefit the Muslim agenda and we all know that. I wonder if Obama will get on TV and tell Americas that we are good and peaceful people that should not let the actions a “few bad apples” ruin it. Or will he bash white people again as being racist bigots and anti-Muslim? My guess it the second.

Oh you mean the website that declared
In reality, there is no such thing as an “innocent” Muslim.
Barakat's tweets were critical of Israel, they were not anti-Semitic but it's probably pointless to argue with a website that says there are no innocent Muslims.

Oh my god, I found the site with the most racist people in America. Thanks.

I read his tweets too. They were pro-Palestine and pro-syrian and he did have some questionable views on 9/11 but I wouldn't condemn his based on that. My white DH thinks some pretty crazy things about 9/11.

I thought it was a parking space dispute? Are you suggesting that Barakat was killed because of his views on politics and religion?

Of course the attacks on the victims were bound to come. Before this is over, the Islamophobes will be claiming that Craig Stephen Hicks was the only thing standing between freedom and the implementation of Sharia in Chapel Hill. A new hero is born.

I understand where you're coming from but you couldn't possibly think that the media or investigators would not only investigate everything about Hicks but also Barakat.

When Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and others were killed, the media and investigators went into every orifice looking for dirt. You can't possibly believe the same wouldn't happen to everyone involved in the Chapel Hill tragedy whether it's a parking dispute or not.

no, not at all. The Fort Hood shooting was clearly tied to religious fanaticism, but we called that workplace violence.

+1. Example is when the recently converted man in Oklahoma was fired and beheaded his co-worker. Some of us thought that this more of a disgruntled man going postal. But MANY people on DCUM pointed out that the guy ws Muslim and that the incident certainly had to be related to Islam. Interesting that they won't jump to the same conclusions in this case.
