I actually have no problem with anyone investigating Barakat's past. But, unless that past includes provoking parking disputes, I don't think it helps Hicks' case. To the contrary, if it is demonstrated that Barakat frequently conveyed his views about Islam and the Middle East to Hicks, it strengthens the case that Hicks acted due to his hatred of religion. What I do object to is the character assassination perpetrated by the bigoted Islamophobe site that mischaracterized Barakat's tweets. If someone were relying on Storm Front as evidence against an ethnic or religious minority, wouldn't we all object? I don't see any difference in this instance. |
I agree with all of the above.
and of course a religion hater might get even more psycho over a parking dispute if the other side looked really outwardly religious. but that is not anti-muslim, that is anti-religion. i.e., the facts may or may not show that this guy also screamed and yelled at mormons, orthodox jews, born again types, you name it .... |
His Facebook page clearly shows that he had issues with Christians, especially Mormons, and all "Abrahamic religions". There is absolutely no evidence that his issue was with Muslims alone, but to the contrary he seems to oppose all religions. His Muslim neighbors could have triggered extra anger because they were identifiably religious. |
Y'all were ready to call it terrorism merely because of the guy's name, before we knew a thing about his background. As it turns out, we did investigate and now it is classified as an act of terror. But no need to "let the police do their work" when it's a Muslim. |
The Disney world photos would have been my red flag.
The killings by ISIS have set off some nut jobs and its clear they exist in both the Muslim world and in America. Testosterone is a dangerous neurochemical to have dripping into the blood stream of a man who feels an acute sense of personal impotence. Extremist religions attract them and channel their rage, but so do right wing hate groups. On another note, it doesn't seem Junior College was effective in the case of this killer |
Having lived in the Middle East I can tell you for a fact that just about every man in the middle east has heard this report by now. It fuels their fear , particularly among muslim women that if they try to immigrate to America or want wear a head scarf in America , they will become the target of a hate crime. As most middle east societies barely tolerate other religions at all, and there is often violence between groups, this is already their default assumption of what might happen in the " west" , which they see as overwhelmingly " the other" and/or christian. Its pretty hard to convince them that we are a tolerant society with freedom of religion and separation church and state when something like this happens and the news goes round the world. The only thing that can be done now is political leaders, such as US Atty , Obama need to go on TV and declare this a hate crime and send message the killer is absolutely being condemned for his actions . Whether he was out of his f'ingmind or not really means nothing politically and is just a distraction |
Yeah. Let the police do their work--only took them five years to call it an act of terror. Something we all knew right away. |
It was actually the Alahu akbar' cries before he opened fire... |
Now they know how a Jew in Sweden feels... |
Add to that his connection to the guy from the Falls Church mosque. |
Interesting take. Thanks for sharing. |

Toby Rollo: The #ChapelHillShooting was about a parking space called the United States of America. |
Actually if you google his Facebook posts, he seems to have some history of defending Muslims. Interesting. |
I think he was an equal opportunity hater. |
Don't know if this has been posted, apologies if a double.
