People let's be clear. Some of these posters care about one thing and one thing only: that someone will call them on their own hate spewing s***. They want to to be able to say anything they want without fear of any repurcussions.PERIOD. They think this Sterling case is a harbinger of bad things to come, a time when they will no longer be able to say whatever they want, no matter who it hurts. The thing they don't get is that time NEVER EXISTED. You are never free of consequences of the things you say. Every relationship, business or personal, is a game of chance that you will say something the other person does not like. If you are smart and lucky and THOUGHTFUL, then it is the very RARE occassion that you say something hurtful or offensive. So no one is taking away anyone's rights, just like you have the RIGHT to say anything you want, others have the RIGHT to respond in way they like and that may mean they stop doing business with you or having a personall relationship with you. If you fail to understand that, then you have bigger problems then a perceived lack of privacy. |

Think about when you may have gossiped to a friend about a neighbor & your child was listening. The child repeats to the neighbor or within their earshot. Now the two gossiping adults spoke in private but their conversation did reach other ears and there are consequences. The adult can't hurt or sue you for hurting their feelings (your right to say what you want as long as it doesn't incite violence) but they could stop Speakin to you or stop supporting you which would be their right. That child will be told to watch what he or she says because their words can hurt others or have different consequences. Why is it different now? Not the strongest example but meh. |
Amen dammit!! AMEN!!!!! Best response in this thread!!! |
BIG CHILD IS WATCHING YOU! |
+2. Also, nobody owns an interest in your marriage and is worried about their profit on you. |
To the thought police posters- If I have a fight with a close friend in private, where I lose it and call her a C U next Tuesday and all other kinds of hateful things. She then shares this abusive tirade with our whole group of friends and now everyone thinks I am a dick. How is this a threat to my first amendment rights? Why should there be no consequences because this conversation happened in private? No lets say this friend is actually a work colleague, and the things I said in the heat of the moment are then talked about at work... I mean that would really suck for me but I think I would only have myself to blame right?
Actions have consequences, that is life not some political talking point...why do we have to have this same discussion every time a celebrity says something dumb? |
LMAO!!! |
You know it really did not get to me or truly hurt me until I heard my co-worker, I person I work with, talk to and laugh with say to someone '... But did he have to lose his livelihood over something he said in private?'
I guess that means a person can hate me, vilify me and blatantly disrespect me but because does it in private I am obligated to pay him for the privilege of doing so. I am obligated to buy tickets to his games, buy his paraphenalia and continue to help him profit off his hatred of me. Damn, aren't I a person? |
People are allowed to be racist, sexist, ageist. Just keep those thoughts to yourself for goodness sakes is the takeaway here. |
you are missing the point. you might say something in private that you might later reqret, or not even mean, and if it is taped illegally and released, it can destroy your livelihood? that seems unfair. try to ignore the subject matter and focus on the privacy aspects. |
Why is everyone surprised by this? People who are public figures need to be damn careful about the things they say. Look at Mitt Romney and his comments about not caring about the 43 percent. It was a dumb thing to say, someone recorded it, and it tanked his campaign. If you say something stupid, you better be prepared to face the consequences. By the way, I'm sure he'll manage to find a way to pay the bills. This nonsense about losing his "livelihood" is just a distraction. ![]() |
Yes, that's true. You might. Or I might. And? |
I don't give a shit about Sterling. Talking about privacy concerns. Mitt was GIVING A SPEECH TO THE PUBLIC! Talk about a bad example. You have never said dumb jealous things to a gf or bf in a fight? I certainly have. I've made comments I regret. And I am not white by the way. People are human. When you state a fact in private I can see being burned. When you state an opinion in private, IMO it should carry less weight. Sorry. |
