Oh for God's sake, being racist is not illegal

I don't give a shit about Sterling. Talking about privacy concerns. Mitt was GIVING A SPEECH TO THE PUBLIC! Talk about a bad example. You have never said dumb jealous things to a gf or bf in a fight? I certainly have. I've made comments I regret. And I am not white by the way. People are human. When you state a fact in private I can see being burned. When you state an opinion in private, IMO it should carry less weight. Sorry.

So what's your solution for this? We're all supposed to pretend that the person didn't say it? You may decide to do this, or not, for yourself. And I will decide to do this, or not, for myself.

I guess that means a person can hate me, vilify me and blatantly disrespect me but because does it in private I am obligated to pay him for the privilege of doing so. I am obligated to buy tickets to his games, buy his paraphenalia and continue to help him profit off his hatred of me.
Damn, aren't I a person?

you are missing the point. you might say something in private that you might later reqret, or not even mean, and if it is taped illegally and released, it can destroy your livelihood? that seems unfair. try to ignore the subject matter and focus on the privacy aspects.

Why is everyone surprised by this? People who are public figures need to be damn careful about the things they say. Look at Mitt Romney and his comments about not caring about the 43 percent. It was a dumb thing to say, someone recorded it, and it tanked his campaign. If you say something stupid, you better be prepared to face the consequences.

By the way, I'm sure he'll manage to find a way to pay the bills. This nonsense about losing his "livelihood" is just a distraction.

Well said. Sterling is offensive and obnoxious and the NBA is better without him. However, we should be wary of the slippery slope of eroding privacy here, where lovers' quarrels and pillow talk wind up on national TV.

What about all the racist shXX that Marion Barry goes around spouting? And he's not been impeached or forced to resign from the DC Council.

It's not fair! How come Marion Barry gets to say all kinds of stuff, and the voters keep re-electing him, but when this basketball guy says some stuff, causing the NBA to potentially lose millions and millions and millions of dollars, the NBA shuts him down?

Oh that's right, the two cases actually aren't comparable.

Marion Barry is black. He can say anything he wants - that is the way it works.

Marion Barry is not the President, he cant be impeached, if you dont like him Then move to DC and vote him out.
NBA is a business , people are not obligated to patronize that business if they are offended by people in that business.

Yes. Marion Barry is black, and he can say anything he wants, and the voters can decide whether or not to vote for him. Similarly, Sterling is white, and he can say anything he wants, and the NBA and its fans can decide whether or not to have anything to do with him.

It baffles me that people are finding this so hard to understand.

Mitt wasn't really speaking at a public event, to be fair. It was a private dinner with donors, IIRC.

I think that was also the situation when the Obama "clinging to their guns and God" comment came from.

Look, I get the privacy issues. It would be difficult to admit this "evidence" in court. But, his views are his views, he didn't try to deny that he was the one who said it or felt it, and it reflected poorly on the NBA - ie would have lost them money.

They understand, they just don't like it.

Still grasping! Trying to bring up any black person they can think of to prove nothing. No example here is close to comparable to the Sterling issue. No you can't say whatever you want and get away with it. Tis all. Get over yourselves.

Ask yourself...who gives a shit about Marion Barry outside of DC? Nobody.
Ask yourself...who has interest in professional basketball outside of LA? The f#cking world. You got a league that is not only a national sports entertainment industry but a global one with investors and partners from all over who do NOT want their company or product being construed as being in cohorts with a bigot.

Oh please. Ever heard of Isiah Washington? Black public figure, his career tanked after he used a homophobic slur.

Speaking of which, I was quite surprised to see that Grey's invited him back this season.
