For anything contemplating Madlax lacrosse

A lot of outdated and incorrect info above.

First of all, the original post was about the Baltimore Crabs, and it looks like you are focusing mostly on VLC. You clearly are a "Madlax for Life" homer, but here's the truth for those reading this thread.

Blackwolf was run by the former assistant HC for St. Stephen's. TWO YEARS AGO, he raided VLC and Madlax for several players. VLC was hit the hardest because they had a ton of St. Stephen's kids who felt compelled to play for their future coach. You imply this just happened, but it happened over 2 years ago. VLC 2016 was weak initially, but now has a better team than Madlax 2016 (though BW 2016 is the best in this area still).

For VLC 2017, they did not lost "several starters". That is a complete lie. One starter did leave, but that's it. VLC 2017 is by far the best 2017 team in this area.

Madlax has a strong grip on the youth market here, but their HS teams are falling apart. Many guys have left for Blackwolf, Crabs and VLC. Part of the reason why is because those clubs are much more success at tournaments and getting kids committed. Part of the reason is that people get tired of Madlax and paying unnecessary $1000 annual fees.

Let's stop it with the ungrateful quitter reruns. We all know the parents of that kid and the kid spinelessly avoided even sending Madlax owner a courtesy email or voice mail returned message to let him know they were leaving the program for over a month. It takes less than a minute to return a voice mail or type a brief email. That family was classless in their exit, which says nothing to defend Cabell but is true. They could have had some class and then just as classless spread it around to make their kid a media diva. VLC has had a couple of good high school teams, but in truth they have three coaches spread over all their high school and youth teams, are barely able to register enough kids to field a U-13 and U-15 team if the website counts are accurate that only about a dozen kids are registered for those teams. And VLC has no U-11 or U-9 teams. Madlax has over 2,000 kids in their program. It is not even debatable which program is committed to developing players. VLC is already yesterday's darlings like Next Level or Green Turtle were 3-4 years ago. Only Madlax has sustained quality across the age groups and developed high level players.

Why? The "Hey Ungrateful Quitter" piece is a classic. In fact, if it weren't for this thread, I never would have discovered deadspin, which is truly a fabulous site. Even if you don't like the family involved, even if you think the guy is a great coach and Madlax is a great program, you really ought to be able to acknowledge that the emails he authored were extraordinarily out of line even by the low standards of youth sports in the DC metro area.

You are right. I don't go defending Cabell at all, that was very inappropriate and he made a serious mistake in discretion. That email stream was equally insipid and sickening from both the family and Cabell, and after all was written they share the same gutter. And you are also absolutely correct that the local bar is a low standard. From what I have heard and trust from where it came from, some of Ryan McClernan's emails would make for a fabulous Deadspin article. Likely the only somewhat local program above reproach is FCA, love or hate selling religion as a part of it. The point is Cabell has held his program together remarkably well and has over 2,000 youth players. That is unlike any other DMV franchise in this sport.

Is it worth it to play on their hs b teams?

No. Playing for any of his B teams is a waste of time and money (as it is for almost any B team, unless your son just wants to have fun).

Nice how you go about slandering the family, as if that somehow diminishes what the owner wrote. Ask anybody who has left Madlax (and tons have, especially when they go to HS and there are better options), and they'll tell you they've gotten phone calls and emails that are almost replicas.

This coach's tactics - threatening to ruin college recruiting/scholarship chances - it is straight out of "All the Right Moves".

After reading the Madlax emails, Cabell is a certified asshole. Will never buy from that store in mclean again.

Too many lacrosse parents are compensating for something and are losers in life pressuring their kids. I see parents at U-13 tournaments videographing for highlight reels. Really? That's a good idea? Don't see this on the sidelines of other youth sports our kids have played. Bottom line is lacrosse seems to be one of the last cool sports where a sheltered emotionally derelict 105 pound preppy kid can actually play a college sport someday.

Lee Steinberg, nee Jerry McGuire, was wrong...when these boys ready for bat mizvah they realize chances of owning an NBA team are better than playing in the NBA. Add to that they can always play D1 lacrosse because no real athletes are in the sport because there are no professional income possibilities in the MLL.

Well...that seemed to be the last word. Lacrosse parents are more pathetic than their twice held back 105 pound 9th weakling lacrosse sons. Let's be honest, it isn't even a real sport compared to football or soccer.

Nice try, troll. Why don't you pick up a lacrosse stick and throw and catch w/ either hand while running.

You mean just like how all the 9 year olds playing rec lacrosse do? Give it a rest Winthrop IV, a forehand and backhand shot in tennis is more skilled. Catching and throwing with a jai-alai crosse is what any kid could do, because they can.

Lacrosse is an odd sport. The equipment is expensive, the club fees are expensive and the private schools that give the kids the best chances to get noticed or recruited are really expensive. Then the college scholarships are really scarce given less than 60 D1 scholarship programs and about 12 scholarships NCAA limits for D1 lacrosse teams with 50 boys on them. From a monetary and an investment perspective, this makes less sense than the dot com boom. Nobody raising a high level lacrosse player will ever get their sunken costs back. Why is it that in every DMV township THIS is the sport people back their family nest egg into? I have young kids who play and love the game but we have no expectations they are strong enough to be serious players, but I have to admit I am a little bit morbidly interested with taking in as much crazy lacrosse parent activity as a spectator as I can get. It is fabulously entertaining over anything on the television. Is there a clinical explanation for this obsessive compulsion amongst DMV parents in such a small potatoes sport? If my kids were 7 feet tall with a jump shot, I could relate to making life decisions around their sports but lacrosse is not like that. Is there a clinical explanation for this obsessive compulsion amongst DMV parents in such a small potatoes sport?
