Let's stop it with the ungrateful quitter reruns. We all know the parents of that kid and the kid spinelessly avoided even sending Madlax owner a courtesy email or voice mail returned message to let him know they were leaving the program for over a month. It takes less than a minute to return a voice mail or type a brief email. That family was classless in their exit, which says nothing to defend Cabell but is true. They could have had some class and then just as classless spread it around to make their kid a media diva. VLC has had a couple of good high school teams, but in truth they have three coaches spread over all their high school and youth teams, are barely able to register enough kids to field a U-13 and U-15 team if the website counts are accurate that only about a dozen kids are registered for those teams. And VLC has no U-11 or U-9 teams. Madlax has over 2,000 kids in their program. It is not even debatable which program is committed to developing players. VLC is already yesterday's darlings like Next Level or Green Turtle were 3-4 years ago. Only Madlax has sustained quality across the age groups and developed high level players.
Why? The "Hey Ungrateful Quitter" piece is a classic. In fact, if it weren't for this thread, I never would have discovered deadspin, which is truly a fabulous site. Even if you don't like the family involved, even if you think the guy is a great coach and Madlax is a great program, you really ought to be able to acknowledge that the emails he authored were extraordinarily out of line even by the low standards of youth sports in the DC metro area.
You are right. I don't go defending Cabell at all, that was very inappropriate and he made a serious mistake in discretion. That email stream was equally insipid and sickening from both the family and Cabell, and after all was written they share the same gutter. And you are also absolutely correct that the local bar is a low standard. From what I have heard and trust from where it came from, some of Ryan McClernan's emails would make for a fabulous Deadspin article. Likely the only somewhat local program above reproach is FCA, love or hate selling religion as a part of it. The point is Cabell has held his program together remarkably well and has over 2,000 youth players. That is unlike any other DMV franchise in this sport.
After reading the Madlax emails, Cabell is a certified asshole. Will never buy from that store in mclean again.
