Private & Independent Schools
Eww Arlington. Let me guess. Government employee? GS something. You probably are the person from va with not one but 2 st pats stickers on your car. Hey look at me! |
Wrong. DH is "biglaw" partner. HHI is almost 3M. We choose to live in VA because of the lower tax burden. We also don't live in a McMansion, but in a 1930s Tudor. You are a bigot. |
| PP I think I just fell in love. Anyway we also are VA people who cross the bridge. I have to say when it comes down to it. We really don't care what someone if someone from DC rolls their eyes when we go to a DC school. I think you have to be pretty insecure to avoid a great school because you were worried that someone on DCUM was bullying you via the internet. Luckily I actually have not encountered too many nasty DC people at our school. Anyway.. we focus on getting the best opportunities for our kids. We work hard..choose to live in VA for better taxes and ease to work. Oh..yes and not government workers--by the way..what is wrong with someone working for the government..weird statement. Carry on with the trolling. |
| hit send too quickly sorry for typos... |
+1. I feel the need to point out that these are not DC or MD schools. These are independent schools that happen to be located in DC or MD. There was a thread a few years back in which some DCUM freaked out that non-DC residents were taking spots in "DC schools", apparently believing that Sidwell and the Cathedral schools were designed to be alternatives to DCPS public schools. I originally moved to VA because it was an easier commute to law school than MD and being young and from a small town, I was intimidated by living in the city. Post-law school was working in VA and met and married a man living in VA so a move to DC or MD never made sense. Now that we have kids, we are looking at private schools and many of the best privates just happen to be located across state lines. Big deal, I haven't suddenly become a social climber because I am interested in the best possible education for my kids. FWIW, there is some crazy stuff coming out of Richmond, but on a day to day basis it doesn't impact me or my life. And, I'm just not politically activist enough to say that disrupting our lives by moving to Bethesda simply to avoid the Virginia legislature is top on my list of priorities. If I'm tacitly supporting some of the hyper-right wing politics coming out of Richmond, does that mean all Upper NW residents are supporting the corruption and general nuttiness of the DC government simply by their address? Marion Barry, anyone? That's just silly. I'd hope that at the end of the day we all make the best choices for our families, and that includes place of residence, commute, education and the like. |
| I find this thread wildly entertaining. Thanks for posting it. By the way, I live in NW DC and am a total snob about VA. I don't know why. I just am. I admit it. |
| Good you admit that you are an ass..awesome! |
+1000 The comments on this thread really make some living in DC or MD look childish at best. I use the word "some" for real adults learned long ago how foolish it is to generalize about anything. |
What are you, 12? |
| This thread is awesome! I opened it expecting to read about great VA colleges and the Peoples' Republic of Arlington. Instead we get "VA McMansions are tacky and if you really had old money you could afford a big ol' 1920s house in NWDC or Chevy Chase" (hate to admit it but I kinda agree). But nothing about UVA - could that be because public colleges aren't on the radar screen of parents who commute in to DC privates? |
Age 10, I think. |
Probably. Fits with the rest of the "I live in DC and happily pay more and get less" mentality. You know, high taxes and crappy public schools and services, expensive private schools that likely aren't better than Fairfax, Arlington, or Montgomery county schools. Mediocre private colleges that are far more expensive than UVa, one of the best unvisited in the country, public or private. Yep, those DC residents are smart, sophisticated, and tolerant, as the posts here prove. |
|
MD = so so public universities, no personality as a state chain stores, OPEC money all over Wisconsin Avenue, crazy state politics, if you aren't über liberal or Jewish no one accepts you (ever heard of tolerance, everyone has a right to their opinion)
DC = politics as bad as Chicago's, bad public schools, terrible traffic infrastructure, too many traffic circles, rat problem, no voting rights, very divided city, you think NW really takes care of the other wards??? I really never understood why anyone wants to live in DC unless you are a bar hopping intern VA = NOVA or the 703 very disconnected from rest of state, low taxes but much of state income taxes to pay for wacko policies for other parts of the state (subsidizing), public schools are hit or miss but universities are very good, but very competitive so no guarantee, not much religious diversity outside of Protestants and Catholics, |

I'm so glad all you DC transplants who think you are snobs because you live in DC are there and not in VA or MD. Stay there. Away from most Washingtonians. I just cannot stand people who are ignorant about almost everything about this area but act as if they are Washingtonians. It's quite hillarious to us locals actually. Maybe I should move to manhattan and tell everyone I'm a "real new yorker." EYE roll.
Like yeehaw hon. I'm fixin' to get to know me some more Washingtonians who live in the District. Yeah Dude. You are like so too cool/snob for everyone. |
OR it could go like this: DC: Old Old money http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/where-we-live/post/house-of-the-week--kalorama-beaux-arts-mansion-for-4495-million/2013/03/07/7d94d8d4-876b-11e2-999e-5f8e0410cb9d_blog.html . Has political issues but hey what about Ken Cuccinelli, the tobacco lobby, and the Southern Va lobby that fleeces Nova? Great houses that have both a city and suburban flair. If you're on this thread or this board then we can be honest. To live the good life in DC you must have a really high income or a trust fund that is sending quarterly checks that make up for your paltry NGO salary. Most people I know have both. Sure there is a high sense of entitlement but that comes with the territory. Taxes are relatively low when you factor in property tax and no taxes on groceries. Of course dummies don't look at TOTAL tax effect. The best of the best live here. At such high incomes it doesn't matter if you do private. Lots of humble brag i.e. lawyers making $500k driving 2000 Camrys. MD: Quite like DC, yes very liberal, but also one of the highest income states in the country. Great suburbs. Great public schools. VA: Probably the most diverse due to high number of immigrants. Very NEW. New money, New homes (poor construction quality), new Americans, new Everything. As someone once said There are new Lees in Virginia. If you get it you get it. Hides behind low taxes but actually his same tax burden when all taxes are factored in. Southern Va dominates politics and takes all the money. Look how long it's taken to widen 66. Very middle class, desolate landscape of strip malls and developments. Only argument to move there is "for the schools". |
