The kids will be fine taking a bus instead of walking. Thousands of kids do it in MCPS. They will be fine.

More like 50% of the kids who can walk to Wootton will be forced to take a bus. That means their parents will have to drive to pick up for after school activities, further clogging the roads around Crown.

Wootton can be repaired in the interim, and renovated in the long term. It's just that MCPS doesn't want to do that.

They will survive. Gosh, how do the rest of us schlubs manage put our kids on the bus and drive to pick them up after school for activities.

Moco tax revenues are down. Enrollment is declining. Makes zero sense to rebuild Wootton for a few neighborhoods to have to take a bus.

I don't work for MCPS, and I think it's a stupid idea to fix Wootton AND open Crown.

It’s stupid idea to build crown. MCPS’s mismanagement is undeniable. They poured resources into opening an unnecessary school while neglecting Wootton’s needs, now forcing Wootton to become the victim of their poor planning and lose its current building where they belong for 50+ years. It’s no different from Silver Spring international middle school which is forced to close.

Not saying it wasn't stupid to build Crown, but what's your solution for Wootton? Keep kids there in a moldy tinderbox of a building just to prove the point that MCPS is stupid? Or send kids 2.3 miles away to a brand new building with all the bells and whistles (but oh yeah, you have to let another ES or two into the mix)? The Wootton community looks pretty bad opposing this.

This may be a solution, but it’s happening only after MCPS’s mismanagement has already done its damage. They should have just renovated Wootton according to the original CIP. Instead, they invited avoidable problems and widespread disruption. MCPS is the one at fault and should be condemned. Wootton is the victim and the one paying the price for MCPS poor decisions.

We are all victims of MCPS' poor planning and management, not just in this case.

But it would be stupid to keep making bad decisions one after another. Moving Wootton to Crown is the best play with the cards we've been dealt.

Sure, MCPS sucks, but when they started to build Crown, all of the surrounding HS were projected to be over capacity, and they didn't have this regional model concept.

Now, they are projecting enrollment declines, and we have a huge budget issue.

Yes, they should've fixed Wootton a while ago, but there were a lot of schools that needed to be fixed in the CIP.

So, here we are, declining enrollments, budget issues, a brand new HS, and another HS next to that new build that is falling apart.

Common sense is to move the Wootton kids to Crown.

No one holds MCPS accountable. They have a huge budget issue then why they push this regional model? Where is money for that? Wootton may be the first to be forced to relocate. But be aware more schools will be forced to close or relocate because no one holds MCPS accountable.

Wootton is the most hated school in the county for racist reasons…we don’t have the levels of other W schools yet our average SAT results and MCAP pass rates are higher. We are a majority minority school where most parents are immigrants to this country. Unfortunately we have the wrong kind of minority that woke justice warriors like to dump on. Every other thread is about Wootton. It’s insane. Yes, we don’t fit your crazed racial narratives. We are sorry for having a student body of capable kids.

If you're so smart, how come you didn't figure it out that they were never going to let you have a "good" education. Why did you line up to set up the scholastic hierarchy. You thought if you were all yes Asians and helped to keep the riff raff out, they would give you model minority status or something.

This is coming from a former FARMS kid that's better than you at math.

It's not common sense at all and represents a significant move - causing unnecessary disruption to thousands of families. When you make a mistake, you don't compound that mistake by saying "oh well, you're going to do what we want anyway." That just pisses people off. Wootton can be renovated over time, with the most egregious problems fixed. MCPS simply doesn't want to do this.

Also, can you explain how Wootton is "next to that new build that is falling apart"? They're not exactly next to each other - not by a long shot.

Finally, as for declining enrollments, you seem to want to take what MCPS says at face value. If they got the construction of Crown so wrong, why do you believe them now?

+1 Wootton isn't unique in this regard. Thomas Jefferson just across the river has an even higher number of Asian students.

I guess you missed the whole thing about how their was a lawsuit filed against TJ for the new admissions process that it implemented several years back that unfairly discriminated against Asians:

Wootton parents are complaining about the facilities and want immediate action. Due to the wasteful spending with no accountability or transparency, there is NO money to repair or replace the failing schools, and Wootton is not alone; they are just the ones making the biggest fuss. So, MCPS came up with a solution to give them Crown. That's not an unreasonable solution.

Many of our kids are in similar buildings not even on the list for repairs. They are offering you a solution and you are still complaining. The only other option is to bump a worse school off the list to put Wooton first. That's not a fair solution either.

Teachers have been complaining for years about the conditions of these buildings with many of us with issues secondary to the mold/air quality. They keep putting bandaids over everything and brushing us aside.
