Someone explain this to me like I'm 5.

Canada and other nations have resources that Trump wants. Think of it like in a group of friends everyone has 2 cookies. Trump has two cookies but he wants more cookies. Trump’s a bit bigger and therefore thinks he deserves as many cooked as he wants - especially because his friends keep saying yes! You deserve more. So, Trump bullies Canada until he gets what he wants. Hopefully Canada joins with others and punches him in the nose when he tries to grab their cookies.

We elected trump. we are the ugly bullies.

Half of us did not.

More than half did not. But he is still our representative on the world stage. It is a shameful situation.

I live in northern Ontario (ie nickel and gold belt), and I heard that Musk is involved in owning a new mine in Timmins (gold capital of northern ON). If this is true, I wonder if he is using his Canadian citizenship. FYI we produce tons of nickel up here that is exported to the US.

Same, I never vote conservative, and refrained from voting in this provincial election, but I do like Ford’s approach.

Sudbury? Impressed with DCUM's reach.

(I'm originally from North Bay but I left decades ago).

What the heck. I am a Montrealer who lives in NB for work. I attend conferences in DC, which is why I am on here.

It’s all good.
I used to live in Montreal too. Still miss the cafes and restos, the jazz fest, and the bagels!

If our friends to the South would like to buy Canadian, St Viateur in Montreal will ship you bagels. These are the best!

Buy the bagels everyone. They’re worth it.

yes, I thought the description Trump gave was that the US would match the tariffs of other countries to us.

Maple syrup from Quebec can be shipped to US. Apparently you won’t be subjected to tariffs if your is less than $800 CAD.

Anonymous wrote:The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on unjustified U.S. tariffs against Canada:

“Today, after a 30-day pause, the United States administration has decided to proceed with imposing 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian exports and 10 per cent tariffs on Canadian energy. Let me be unequivocally clear – there is no justification for these actions.

“While less than 1 per cent of the fentanyl intercepted at the U.S. border comes from Canada, we have worked relentlessly to address this scourge that affects Canadians and Americans alike. We implemented a $1.3 billion border plan with new choppers, boots on the ground, more co-ordination, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. We appointed a Fentanyl Czar, listed transnational criminal cartels as terrorist organizations, launched the Joint Operational Intelligence Cell, and are establishing a Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force on organized crime. Because of this work – in partnership with the United States – fentanyl seizures from Canada have dropped 97 per cent between December 2024 and January 2025 to a near-zero low of 0.03 pounds seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“Canada will not let this unjustified decision go unanswered. Should American tariffs come into effect tonight, Canada will, effective 12:01 a.m. EST tomorrow, respond with 25 per cent tariffs against $155 billion of American goods – starting with tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods immediately, and tariffs on the remaining $125 billion on American products in 21 days’ time. Our tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. trade action is withdrawn, and should U.S. tariffs not cease, we are in active and ongoing discussions with provinces and territories to pursue several non-tariff measures. While we urge the U.S. administration to reconsider their tariffs, Canada remains firm in standing up for our economy, our jobs, our workers, and for a fair deal.

“Because of the tariffs imposed by the U.S., Americans will pay more for groceries, gas, and cars, and potentially lose thousands of jobs. Tariffs will disrupt an incredibly successful trading relationship. They will violate the very trade agreement that was negotiated by President Trump in his last term.”

Trudeau doesn’t get to decide. Trump does. His Order, his tariffs. Good on him.

Canada and Mexico will absolutely hurt more than the US but the US will hurt as well. Make no mistake, NOBODY. N O B O D Y wins in a trade war. It's only the extent and length of the pain. Everyone - the rich, the poor - will feel this in all 3 countries. How badly you suffer is the question but it's just totally silly.

It's one thing to want to express your dominance but it's another to inflict suffering upon everyone, including yourself. I'm not sure what is wrong with everyone these days. Boycotts of corporations is the same concept. You just can't expect to not go to a store out of spite and cause people to lose their jobs to make a point to people who do not care about the point you are trying to make. There are so many other ways for Trump to make a point just the same as those who are angry about the policies of certain companies. It's not to make everyone suffer!!!

I'm so worried about our world. Globally. This is more than just Canada and Mexico. US impacts globally and you can be sure that globally, we're all in so much uncertainty right now. I'm not sure the US is going to come out of this ahead in the world as we have been for so many years. There's a lot of players and it's no longer the one country that dominates. There's going to be a lot of changes globally and I predict in the coming years, the good news is that it isn't going to be just one player who gets to call the shots. It'll be interesting to see how long Trump plays the tariff game.

All of the tariffs are laid out in the US-MEX-CAN trade agreement, which Trump negotiated! How can it disadvantage the US, when the US signed off on it? The US has a stronger negotiating position than Canada and Mexico put together!

How does it prove climate change is a scam. I bought an Ioniq. It's not like Tesla is the only or even the best EV out there. Def. not the most affordable.

Canada and Mexico should make the biggest deal no one has seen before with each other and royally screw the US.
