25 % tariffs on Canadian goods

I could have sworn Trump ran on making electricity cheaper.
Not just eggs.

But it's probably all Canada's fault for letting their geese sneak across the border with bags of fentanyl.

+1. Trump voter here, but happy to vacation Up North to take advantage of the plummeting Canadian Dollar. Good times!

Oh silly MAGA, we all know you don’t vacation outside of the Redneck Riviera.

What? I’m not even in the USA now .

Da. We know Vlad.

“Today, after a 30-day pause, the United States administration has decided to proceed with imposing 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian exports and 10 per cent tariffs on Canadian energy. Let me be unequivocally clear – there is no justification for these actions.

“While less than 1 per cent of the fentanyl intercepted at the U.S. border comes from Canada, we have worked relentlessly to address this scourge that affects Canadians and Americans alike. We implemented a $1.3 billion border plan with new choppers, boots on the ground, more co-ordination, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. We appointed a Fentanyl Czar, listed transnational criminal cartels as terrorist organizations, launched the Joint Operational Intelligence Cell, and are establishing a Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force on organized crime. Because of this work – in partnership with the United States – fentanyl seizures from Canada have dropped 97 per cent between December 2024 and January 2025 to a near-zero low of 0.03 pounds seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“Canada will not let this unjustified decision go unanswered. Should American tariffs come into effect tonight, Canada will, effective 12:01 a.m. EST tomorrow, respond with 25 per cent tariffs against $155 billion of American goods – starting with tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods immediately, and tariffs on the remaining $125 billion on American products in 21 days’ time. Our tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. trade action is withdrawn, and should U.S. tariffs not cease, we are in active and ongoing discussions with provinces and territories to pursue several non-tariff measures. While we urge the U.S. administration to reconsider their tariffs, Canada remains firm in standing up for our economy, our jobs, our workers, and for a fair deal.

“Because of the tariffs imposed by the U.S., Americans will pay more for groceries, gas, and cars, and potentially lose thousands of jobs. Tariffs will disrupt an incredibly successful trading relationship. They will violate the very trade agreement that was negotiated by President Trump in his last term.”

Trudeau doesn’t get to decide. Trump does. His Order, his tariffs. Good on him.

Trudeau doesn’t get to decide if Canada imposes tariffs? Is Fauxnews already claiming Canada as a puppet state?

Someone explain this to me like I'm 5.

There is no logical explanation. Republicans point to fentanyl, but less than 1 percent of all fentanyl in the US comes in via Canada. Whereas nearly all the illegal fentanyl in Canada comes in from the US. Just today the Canadians arrested two Americans smuggling fentanyl into the country. So that explanation holds no water.

Every single day, the US and Canada do nearly $4 billion worth of trade. Every single day. That's more than a trillion every year. What's going to happen with the tariffs is catastrophic, particularly for Canada. As Buffet said, it's basically an act of war on Canada. And for what? This is a willful destruction of the entire North American economy. Republicans have become the party of pure nihilism. Canadians are united in their loathing for America right now. And Canada will do whatever it can to inflict maximum hurt on the US economy, particularly the red states.

And the small amount of fentanyl that is coming over the Canadian border into the U.S., is being smuggled by us citizens, who are being allowed back into the U.S. by … U.S. border control. It’s a crock of sh@&.

Except you won’t be able to claim that you’re Canadian to avoid harassment and loathing.

I am Canadian. You will be welcome on vacation here. The US anthem may be boo’ed, but we are upset with the actions of the US government, not with our American friends and neighbours. We make a distinction between your president/elon and ordinary Americans. You will not experience harassment on the streets of Toronto or any other city, but we will (politely) not buy your products nor produce.

I'm Canadian, and I'm not so sure about that.

We need a Prime Minister with a back bone. I'm not sure anyone running for leadership can get us through this disaster.

I hope Doug Ford sticks to his threat with the power. Or charge more for it. I wonder how many stores are pulling US alcohol from the shelves? Those sections should be empty by opening tomorrow.

I love Canadian’s response from Ontario Premier Doug Ford …..

"If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do anything — including cutting off their energy — with a smile on my face," Ford said during his first news conference since winning a landslide victory in a provincial election last week.

"They need to feel the pain. They want to come at us? We've got to go back twice as hard," Ford said.

Last time I read about Fentanyl it was being manufactured in China and mailed to the US. It also comes through the Mexican border more so than Canadian border.

And the reason Fentanyl is coming into our country is because America is the number one consumer of illegal drugs. Supply and demand. Has our law enforcement identified any Canadian drug kingpins?

Canadians really are polite. My mother grew up there. Montreal and Quebec City are beautiful clean cities with lots to offer. If you love nature then Nova Scotia is the place to go. It’s quite peaceful with no road rage. It’s a peninsula plus a lot of lakes for activities. We went last summer and it gave me a peaceful feeling.

What goods can we buy to show support for our Canadian friends? Specifically things that replace red state goods.

He's trying to screw them so that they agree to become part of the US.
He's serious about this.
