Are people canceling summer vacations or not really that concerned yet?

I’m concerned about the EU requiring visas/having sanctions if Trump continues to be Putin’s yes-man.

We just returned from a trip to Europe. We were surprised that the Europeans preferred Trump over Biden as they think he is better set to stop the Ukraine war. We were really surprised at the number of Europeans that brought this topic up to us.

Not sure where you were but this was not our experience 2 weeks ago in Europe. Not one single person in the 3 countries we were in preferred Trump. They all despised him.

Shocker. Their populist governments dislikes our populist government. No one is winning (or losing) this morality race. Once we stop shelling out the money, their pretense of friendship is gone.

All of our governments have been an embarrassment time and again. We happen to be at a higher embarrassment phase. Who cares?

How do all of you end up engaged in these conversations? I’ve been in Europe during a Trump presidency, the Iraq war…and never once over many trips did I end up in one of these conversations.

Because I was on a private tours with local people for several days in different areas. And Trump always comes up. But yes you’re right, otherwise it probably wouldn’t come up.

I live in Europe and it does come up. They actually have real news here - not just Fox News - and they know what's going on. They despise Trump/Musk.

I had a lot of similar political conversations on my last two Europe trips, but I don’t agree that they were more informed. For example, our guide in Denmark brought up abortion rights and was shocked to learn that Democrats support open-ended abortion rights. European countries have 12/15/22 week limits and she didn’t understand why that would be considered controversial. So that is just one example where she had a bias against Republicans based on lack of knowledge.

The reason this works in Europe is because everyone has access to affordable health care, including reproductive health care. When someone finds out they’re pregnant, it’s not difficult to get an early term abortion. In the US, many people don’t have access to any health care, and reproductive health care is virtually non-existent in many (red) states. So even if they find out they’re pregnant early, they can’t easily get abortion care. And many don’t find out early or have to delay care because it’s so hard to fine, leaving them needing later term abortions.

And European countries do allow late-term abortion when situation is life-threatening.

Life threatening health problems in late pregnancy = caesarian section, not late term abortion. And I think you are really overstating the lack of reproductive care. But if this is a concern for you, donate to organizations that can provide free abortions. Or promote contraception.

I'm another poster who travels substantially and who even lived overseas during the first Trump administration. Rarely did the topic of Trump ever come up during my travels or expat days. People are far more consumed by their own domestic politics to care much about American presidents, who come and go with regularity. All European countries have strong populist movements and the AfD just won 20% of the vote in Germany and Marie Le Pen won 33% last year in France, both levels much higher than in previous elections. A PP is correct when she says European media (especially EU media, the UK is different) is broadly more censorious and toeing the official EU line in its reporting, but talking to people on the ground is a very different story. It's like believing MSNBC news solely in reporting on American affairs. Pretty much all of Europe is deeply concerned with mass migration and the issues with integrating non Europeans into their society and the abundance of failures in doing so, which I heard first hand many times from living in Europe. So be careful in making assumptions based on what you might read in certain newspapers.

I'll have to add that the majority of times I heard Trump discussed and disparaged was from fellow Americans more than any locals in any country I traveled in or lived in.

Wow… did you actually listen to the speech?

Yes I did and I was deeply ashamed. Since when does the US Government officially support Nazis? What a disgrace.

Trump is a disgrace and embarrassment. But don’t ever forget the real reason that Europeans hate him - the jig is up. We are less likely to pay for their defense and Putin is at their doorstep. It’s always about $$$$.

It has always benefitted Americans to have wars play out in someone else's back yard $$$$ is cheaper than American blood.

Joining with the EU against Putin benefits the U.S. people. That is the bottom line and you are shortsighted only thinking of the $$$.

lol guess you have not talked to any Europeans lately. They are all freaking out. NATO is dead, tariffs are coming and Sweden and Finland are starting up there nuclear weapon programs. I bet you have never been to Europe.

We're biding our time. Too much uncertainty right now. Prices on everything from flights to hotels to cars could be on a rollercoaster foreseeable future.

Multiple posters have exhibited similar experiences. Are hotel clerks or restaurant servers or museum guards or bus drivers starting brusque conversations about Trump with you? No, of course not. That's not how it works for tourists.

So support of free speech and democratic elections = supporting Nazis? I'm wondering how old you are. We used to be educated on the Enlightenment and we use to believe that we had a system that was different than the authoritarians of the USSR.
