Are people canceling summer vacations or not really that concerned yet?

We just returned from a trip to Europe. We were surprised that the Europeans preferred Trump over Biden as they think he is better set to stop the Ukraine war. We were really surprised at the number of Europeans that brought this topic up to us.

Not sure where you were but this was not our experience 2 weeks ago in Europe. Not one single person in the 3 countries we were in preferred Trump. They all despised him.

How do all of you end up engaged in these conversations? I’ve been in Europe during a Trump presidency, the Iraq war…and never once over many trips did I end up in one of these conversations.

Because I was on a private tours with local people for several days in different areas. And Trump always comes up. But yes you’re right, otherwise it probably wouldn’t come up.

I live in Europe and it does come up. They actually have real news here - not just Fox News - and they know what's going on. They despise Trump/Musk.

I had a lot of similar political conversations on my last two Europe trips, but I don’t agree that they were more informed. For example, our guide in Denmark brought up abortion rights and was shocked to learn that Democrats support open-ended abortion rights. European countries have 12/15/22 week limits and she didn’t understand why that would be considered controversial. So that is just one example where she had a bias against Republicans based on lack of knowledge.

The reason this works in Europe is because everyone has access to affordable health care, including reproductive health care. When someone finds out they’re pregnant, it’s not difficult to get an early term abortion. In the US, many people don’t have access to any health care, and reproductive health care is virtually non-existent in many (red) states. So even if they find out they’re pregnant early, they can’t easily get abortion care. And many don’t find out early or have to delay care because it’s so hard to fine, leaving them needing later term abortions.

And European countries do allow late-term abortion when situation is life-threatening.

Life threatening health problems in late pregnancy = caesarian section, not late term abortion. And I think you are really overstating the lack of reproductive care. But if this is a concern for you, donate to organizations that can provide free abortions. Or promote contraception.

Where are you getting your medical information?

That is a SHOULD BE... duh.

Switching to camp on a national park

We only do driving trips anyway but are not making any plans. We spent $4k last year on a 10-day trip. If we do anything, it will be more like half that.

We are inching toward a trip to Europe: got low-priced award flights and booked one out of three weeks from a non-Airbnb cottage rental company. Only planning on rural stays.

Telling ourselves we should go while we still can and try to escape for a while.

Not cancelling

I wouldn’t cancel if I thought we both would have jobs this summer. But it’s looking like only one of us will have a job this summer.

I got word that my school-based job will be cut in half. Still going on a trip and to visit family but smaller scale

Good luck with that, they are going to be severely understaffed…

Usually do a big spring break trip - this year, doing half a week and driving. Spouse and I fed-adjacent contractors.

Moving forward with a destination wedding but not planning any future trips. Was going to head down to Miami for a few days to visit friends but now have decided against it. Putting on hold home renovations to two bathrooms. DH is a government contractor so who knows what will happen.

Have a huge trip this summer to Europe, about half paid for (flights/deposits) - can still cancel and will if we go into a economic tailspin.

We're neither fed nor fed adjacent, but I think the economic impact of the recent changes will be terrible for our local economy. We are still traveling but scaled back. Instead of 2 weeks in Europe, we're doing 1. Instead of traveling for Spring Break, we're staying local. We're also not booking camps and will stick with less expensive options like swim team and tutoring.

No. A younger me would have but life is too short.

we're focusing on upping our cash reserves, no big vacation planned this year aside from weekend driving trips to visit grandparents with a pool

I posted when this thread was new that we would likely keep our vacation for spring break. Now with the memo I don’t see how that will even be possible. Luckily we can recoup most of the cost.
