Take the 9 month severance or leave it. But you can’t stop what’s coming.

It's not a severance, they would need to actually fire people to give them severance.

Can these people go to their department HR and initiate this on their own? Why this extra step?

It is a trick.

+1 I read the email and I’m confused how anyone could take it any other way? They are saying if you don’t want to return to in person work, say so by responding to the email and you will be exempted from RTO policies AND that you will therefore resign by Sept. 30. I doubt anyone is going to get admin leave until Sept. 30 with how understaffed everyone is all the time.

I guess you’d take it if you really didn’t want to/couldn’t work in person and were confident that you could find another job by Sept. 30. But it’s not an “8 month buyout” or whatever the hell the media is inaccurately reporting.

There is an OPM memo to the heads of departments and agencies that says "Employees who accept the deferred resignation should promptly have their duties rea-assigned or eliminated and be placed on paid administrative leave until the end of the deferred resignation period (generally, September 30, 2025, unless the employee has elected another earlier resignation dat), unless the agency head determines that it is necessary for the employee to be actively engaged in transitioning job duties, in which case employees should be placed on administrative leave as soon as those duties are transitioned."

They released the FAQs and it clarifies that you'd only have to work on rare occasions. I'm seriously considering the offer. I love my job, and I voted for Trump (come at me!). But it appears that forced relocations are in the mix. My spouse makes 7 figures. I think I might just leave and find a consulting gig.

This is NOT about being required to go back to work in an office "like other people." It is about entering into a legal employment contract to do your job from a remote location anywhere in the country and now being told that you will be out of a job if you don't move to your employer's brick and mortar location which may be located somewhere half across the country. Bait and switch. Just like this so-called "offer."

The resignation letter in the email I received said none of this. If it's not in the thing you are agreeing to do not believe it.

Yes, my only hesitation is the uncertainty of what I'm agreeing to. It's clear that these EOs, letters, etc are written by people with no policy or contract experience.

If you want to separate do it in your own terms, you will get all your unused annual leave paid out but will give up your sick leave. I'm working on that now. Normally when a kid is sick I would use annual leave to deal with it, now any appointments or home sick I'm using up sick leave. I will last as long as I can.... but when it's time to go I'm out. Unless they offer actual good early retirement options.

How ironic would it be if the only people who fall for this are MAGA dummies...

No, I'm a real person. The number of people with circumstances similar to mine is vanishingly small so I don't think my situation would work well for propaganda. I've already been on the fence about continuing in the government for various reasons that have nothing to do with politics. I've enjoyed my career and just considering leaving while the party is still fun.

It’s not severance if you have to work. It’s severance when they pay you and you don’t work anymore.
