Wow this is going to lead to an exodus at my FIRREA agency. So many were planning to retire this year….why not take free money?
https://www.axios.com/2025/01/28/trump-federa...m_campaign=alerts_dc Who all is taking it? |
No one |
It saves no money if they were retiring anway |
Neither Musk nor Trump have credible histories when it comes to their roles as employers. |
Most of my office are coming back and not resigning anyway. What does a buyout do when you are unemployed?
If you really have barriers to returning, it takes longer to find a job than two weeks. It’s not worth being unemployed while they cut services around us |
Does this apply to part-time employees as well? |
It's not as good a deal as an official RIF, so why would you take it? |
And then watch there be no budget to actually pay the people who take the “deal.” I would never accept an offer like this from Trump! What about collective bargaining agreements with unions, can this type of thing really be enforceable if it’s not in a CBA? I’d be really skeptical… |
Did you expect this administration to have half a brain? I already know 3 people who had announced planned retirement since the New Year. Senior folks. Their plan was to spend down annual leave and separate in mid 2025 They will absolutely take this offer, leave the agency in Feb, get paid until Sept. They get paid out all their annual leave. This is dumb helicopter money to already well-to-do Feds on CSRS with plenty of appreciated assets. |
i'm not a government employee so I don't know what the norm is but this sounds pretty good to me. Last time I was let go, I was given like 2 months severance. |
I’m not a government employee but if my company offered this I’d accept in a heartbeat!! |
Literally the first thing I thought. |
It’s not as good as if they officially RIF you. If you wait for the government to lay you off, you will be given more than this. Unless you are retiring or you really can’t figure out RTO, it doesn’t make much sense |

Question: is this even legal? |
