Many of us are people who genuinely want to do the right thing, but also find some of the amateur public health advice and moralizing ("I'm a good citizen and you are not!") shared on DCUM to this day pretty dumb and irresponsible.

To be fair, you have to include the context that those comments are usually in reaction to those saying they DGAF and Covid is a lie/over/overblown, you name it. I don't hear "I'm a good citizen and you're not", I hear "don't be an ahole". I think there is a distinction.

DP, but you need to read the entire thread. There are people calling other people murderers.

I have read the thread, in fact I tried to say I didn't think people were murderers, but that we should all think about others and not just act like Covid is totally over. You can't win either way.

Spreading a cold or flu is also serious.

Someone knowing sat at a table with my parent having Covid instead of isolating. My parent died.

Why can’t we be like Asian countries and mask when we’re sick to decrease the spread of viruses? It really isn’t that hard.

Because orange man made it a thing, and now people don’t “believe in” masks or they think wearing a mask attacks their freedom.

I shocked a roofer who doesn’t believe in masks by saying he’d probably want a doctor to wear one in surgery. I mean, I certainly would not want accidental spit landing on my internal organs.

I think the roofer never considered this aspect until I mentioned it. He was too busy hating “the libs.”

People don’t think ahead and fall into watching too much dumb TV.

Stop blaming Trump for everything. You sound so childish. People in this country never masked for illness before Covid (i.e. before Trump). It’s just not part of our nature. You can argue about whether or not we should try to make it something we as a society do going forward (as many Asian countries do) but this is not a liberal versus conservative issue.

DP and I disagree. Trump made masking a political issue. He made everything a political issue and it's very destructive to real discourse.

Trump does it because he is mentally ill and wants attention. Ignore him. Things like the vaccines were started with him.

I think you'll find the COVID deniers actually love being called murderers for not wearing masks because it truly makes you look unhinged. I recommend reserving that term for people who perpetuate anti vax myths because those people are truly responsible for a lot of death and the data clearly show this. Not so much for anti-maskers, as annoying as those people were at the height of the pandemic.

DP, and I wish the poster (it seems like only one) who keeps calling people selfish and making unreasonable demands would check out of the thread so that those of us who still, for whatever reason, want to avoid transmitting COVID to people in our lives can have a discussion.

Frankly I think any moralizing about masking is really dumb especially given the benefits are marginal. Unfortunately COVID is out there and you risk catching it when you socialize with others.

I disagree. If you know you are contagious, you should mask.

Yes, but you don't get to decide when someone else is contagious. Current public health guidance is while sick and for 5 days after feeling better. You can test for COVID but it doesn't tell you much and repeated testing is not practical for many people (just to confirm COVID a family of 3 needs 6 testd since you are supposed test twice, nevermind if you are trying to "test out" of masking).

This is the correct answer. People shouldn’t have to mask anymore to make others comfortable. If you don’t want covid, wear a mask in public. It’s the only fair way. Asking others to mask is unreasonable at this point.

I never said I was deciding. But many people don't want to follow that guidance and refuse to mask at all. I don't think that's cool, but no one is going to stop them. They just seem unreasonably upset that some of us think that's wrong.

Vaccines don't stop transmission so harping on them makes no sense. What can you do to help protect others if you are too selfish to isolate when sick is to mask and not touch things.

I just think it's hilarious that people refuse to wear a mask when they are actually sick and contagious, but they think other people should wear masks any time they are in pubic. Wearing a mask when you have symptoms but aren't sick enough where you need to stay home, isn't to make other comfortable - it's to try to avoid transmitting your actual illness to them.

Are you saying that if you have Covid you shouldn't have to mask at all at any point in your illness? I just can't support that way of thinking. You take zero responsibility and put it on everyone else when you are the vector at that point in time. If I have misunderstood, please clarify.

Even if you mask, that doesn't help with surface illnesses, and not everything is just about covid, but colds and flu's. If you are sick, stay home. You can have almost everything delivered now, often within a few hours. It is not unreasonable to expect people who are sick to mask. It's basic decency.
