A word of warning about this round of COVID

Many government agencies were more back to the office starting May 1st.
1st week back - super spreader event where I work with more than 5 people on my team out the next week (and some out the following week as well!

My god it wouldn’t even occur to me to test! Both my kids were sick a few weeks ago and I thought maybe flu, maybe a bad cold or virus and truly Covid didn’t even cross my mind. Stop testing for this bullshit!!!! Just stay home and rest up and resume normal life when you’re better the way it always was. It’s not 2021. I get a very very strange and distinct headache whenever I have Covid that tells me I have it. Otherwise I would never think of it again.

If I had covid now, I'd want to know so I could go stay in the basement and try not to get the rest of my family sick. Not because I'm worried about horrible outcomes, but just because why would I want them to be sick if I can avoid it? Spouse did the same for about four days with the flu recently, and none of the rest of us caught it.

Lots of commands here! Quiz--do we have to follow them, yes or no?

That's great for you. As a PP said, some of us have vulnerable family members we are trying not to infect, which is why we test. Some people also don't want to get others sick period, regardless of whether they are vulnerable.

OP, I appreciate the warning. We are having the same experience. One of my kids has COVID and has continued to see a very strong positive on rapid tests a week after the first positive. My parents are both in poor health, and I spend a lot of time helping/taking care of them. To be honest, I had gotten complacent about COVID. This recent illness was a wake-up call to be more careful.

You should definitely isolate if you have the flu!

Only jerks don't try to isolate when they have COVID.

I work with elderly people. I'm testing so I don't kill anyone.

The majority of us DON’T work with elderly people. We’re not going to kill anyone anymore than if we don’t isolate with the common cold. Stay in your lane.

you don't know if you're exposing someone who has a vulnerable family member. My kid is one. Thanks - I already knew no one gives a sh#@$

People should stay home when they are sick with whatever, not just covid

It's fine if you're actually going to do this, but many people don't. It's certainly not bullshit for a lot of people who can die from it, you self centered shrew.

No one in my family has taken a Covid test since at least 2022. If we are sick we stay home until we feel better.

To address the OP's point, most people, even with the best of intentions, aren't going to be able to isolate for 7-10 days when they are feeling better but still testing positive. The world isn't set up that way. There are too many demands - work, school, family, that make isolation for such a long time impossible. The benefit of testing if you have people in your life that are especially vulnerable is that provides information to make decisions like continuing to mask, opening windows, and avoiding social visits, especially with vulnerable people. We all understand that some people don't care about anyone else, but for those who do, COVID is still a thing.

I have health issues, I still mask and I still test. Only the lucky don't have to anymore.

I’m not worried about Covid any more. It’s May 2024, it’s here to stay. If you have vulnerable family members or people in your life, it’s your responsibility to take precautions. The rest of us can go back to normal.

I think most people agree with this. However:
- The isolation guidelines for COVID required many people who were feeling completely fine to stay home.
- Infectiousness doesn't match up with visible symptoms. A kid with a lingering cough is often not infectious at all. The most infectious time is when a person is just coming down with something and may not have many symptoms at all.

I have vulnerable people in my family and close friends. There is really no escaping the fact that if you socialize indoors, you risk exposure to respiratory illness either from presymptomatic people or symptomatic people who didn't or couldn't stay home. The most vulnerable people I know stay home when their immune systems are most highly compromised. It sucks but there truly is no way for people to completely avoid exposing others to illnesses apart from total societal-wide isolation which is not really possible long term and is extremely harmful.
