Perhaps I should have said most contagious. You are actively spreading before you have any signs of infection. That's when you would be most active and capable of coming into contact with the greater number of people. At peak symptoms, most can barely drag themselves to the store.

I shocked a roofer who doesn’t believe in masks by saying he’d probably want a doctor to wear one in surgery. I mean, I certainly would not want accidental spit landing on my internal organs.

I think the roofer never considered this aspect until I mentioned it. He was too busy hating “the libs.”

Stop blaming Trump for everything. You sound so childish. People in this country never masked for illness before Covid (i.e. before Trump). It’s just not part of our nature. You can argue about whether or not we should try to make it something we as a society do going forward (as many Asian countries do) but this is not a liberal versus conservative issue.

If mask mandates had been shorter and more targeted, I think we'd be in a very different situation when it comes to perceptions about masking.

I agree with you. There was definitely a political aspect to the mask mandates. Like since the right said they hated masks, especially masks on toddlers, the left had to insist on masking in every setting, especially for toddlers. For those of us who had to send our toddlers and preschoolers to daycare/preschool with masks they mostly wore under their noses and took off every 1-2 hours for snacks and naptime, it definitely contributed to losing faith in public health institutions. The worst part was that the messaging on masking was so moralistic, so any concerns about masking young children were rejected and the parents themselves were shamed. As someone whose kid had social issues made worse by masks (saw a clear regression when he started wearing a mask and a clear improvement after the mask mandate was lifted), I really can't with some of the discourse around masks. The benefits were also so exaggerated. Like it made sense during surges and for 10 days after infection to have teens and adults wear respirators, but loose fitting masks on anyone, especially young kids, really never made sense. Some people were really invested in the notion that masks of any kind made sharing air safe and without masks it was automatically unsafe. The messaging was just not credible.

I did not say that. That was a different PP. People with *any* illness should stay home when they are actively sick to minimize spread of infection. That's basic. That is what I meant by "isolate for a short period".

I think whether or not the person who did say that is over stepping depends on what they mean by isolate. Does that really mean stay home when you are first sick or stay home for 10 days. The former is common sense and common courtesy. The latter is no longer necessary.

Either way, the only people who sound unhinged are people like you and other PPs who come on threads like this and stir up trouble because you were so traumatized by Covid, you can't remain civil when the word is mentioned.

The OP said nothing about everyone testing and nothing about everyone isolating. There is a subset of people who still, quite legitimately, pay attention to covid. If you have no reason to do so, count your blessings and leave those of us that do alone. Seriously, go away to other threads where you might possibly have a relevant comment.

People should stay home when they are sick with whatever, not just covid

The onus is on the vulnerable members of society and/or their caretakers to take extra precautions. The whole world is not going to keep shutting down for a virus that for a huge number of folks is so mild that they might not even know they have it.

Are cloth masks, which is what most people wore, even effective in not spreading Covid?

I always assumed it was mostly psychological and that people desperately wanted some form of protection and it was similar to a small child carrying around a security blanket.

The masking of young kids was unreal and shame on the people who went along with it. I personally fought it and was shamed.

I have read the thread, in fact I tried to say I didn't think people were murderers, but that we should all think about others and not just act like Covid is totally over. You can't win either way.

They are better than nothing and the ones I wore had a filter to them so yes they were fine.
