A word of warning about this round of COVID

There is for those of us with vulnerable relatives and friends. My elderly father can't take Paxlovid so we take extra precautions not to expose him.

To pp.
Do keep protecting him.

My dad passed away from kidney issues, we did everything for him not to get it.

I'm confused- did he die of covid or kidney issues?

Very difficult to sue for negligence when you have no right to actually be treated. Very few medical lawsuits in Canada result in any restitution.

We have a high proportion of people with no primary care, can't find a doctor to take them. It is like telling parents your kids don't get an education because the schools are full.

Our hospitals, doctors and veterinarians in our US border towns all warmly welcome our Canadian healthcare business.

I haven't isolated the whole time but have tried to limit close exposures to avoid passing it on.

This is my third time having Covid and definitely the longest I have been sick. I have to fly again in a week. Airplanes are viral nightmares.

I think it is only respectful with any flu or virus to limit giving it to others as some people get taken down much harder than others and some don't have the resources to be off sick for days / weeks. Covid or not, if you are sick, stay home if you can until the contagion period is over.

I wear a mask on flights except when eating. The air is recirculated and not the cleanest. I should have masked on airplanes before COVID too.

I’m not worried at the grocery where I’m continually moving, but I’ll consider wearing a mask anywhere I have to sit still for hours or at a doctor’s office. I was just in a doctor waiting room with two hacking people.

COVID almost killed me last year, and I was hospitalized despite being a healthy weight, reg blood pressure, etc. So, I’ll do what I want.

I’m not bothered at all by people wearing masks, but I don’t understand this logic, and I think it’s things like this that fuel that mockery that some people engage in. Covid doesn’t care if you’re eating or moving quickly. If you’re going to mask, you kind of have to go all in for it to make sense.

I don’t agree. Don’t you think you’re more likely to catch it sitting in an enclosed plane than briefly walking by someone in a grocery store?

The plane thing makes no sense. Mask the whole time except then you’re eating? Covid knows not to mess with you during that time? Please explain how this makes sense.

It's about minimizing risk. 6 hour flight. You have choices. Go unmasked the entire 6 hours in an unventilated plane (I've check the air quality many times, it's not properly ventilated) or mask the entire time except to take a drink or mask the entire time except to eat and drink. The last one means maybe 5-10 mins with mask off (or take bites and put mask back on). Your risk is significantly lower than being unmasked the entire flight.

We used to get sick 40-50% of the time when traveling, especially if someone was hacking away on the plane. Now that we quality mask, we have never gotten sick (we travel a lot).
Those of us that mask are all about reducing our risk. I've masked for 10+ hour flights without a problem.

I was sick for the last 5 days with:

Low-grade fever

Headache

Post-nasal drip

Wicked sore throat followed by tickle then cough

Running nose followed by stuffy nose then face pain (under eye and cheek bones/jaw)

Body aches

Stomach issues (mostly diarrhea)

Finally turning the corner today. Covid test was negative.

"Covid test" as in one test? For rapid tests, serial testing is recommended - false negatives are quite (very!) common. The test hasn't been updated since the original variant. So given the symptoms including fever and the fact that we are not in flu season, I'd assume covid.

We keep the Lucria tests at home. If rapid gives a negative and we have symptoms, we try Lucria. Told partner they had Flu B (not covid), so they could get tamiflu without visiting the doctor.

Seems like you may be infectious for much longer. I am masking but with the latest guidance people probably would not even know.

Why do you keep testing?? What is the point here?

I have an autoimmune disorder and my doctors have advised me not to retest—saying that I’m likely to test positive for months.

On a rapid test? I've never heard of that.

Yeah, that is only the case with PCRs. Even the lucria tests will show negative once you are clear (Know because we tested that theory when we had covid in our home last spring).

I have health issues, I still mask and I still test. Only the lucky don't have to anymore.

Same. However, because I also have a relative with long COVID, I don't think of people who are ignoring all of this as "lucky." I think of them as idiots.

+1 I also have a very fit relative who
