Another snow day!

Which schools and why not? The ones near us were. And if they couldn't clear them yesterday they should have just cancelled last night or early this morning.

If MCPS had a more liberal virtual policy, they could have activated today as a virtual day last evening, giving extra time needed to clear parking lots or residential streets. I am not suggesting that virtual days look exactly like regular days, but students are at least given an opportunity to check in with teachers and continue instruction to some degree - and virtual eliminates the need to make up the day at the end of the year. MCPS needs to call a virtual day for Friday now.

What's wrong with reviewing notes and using the apps they already have access to?

Or having a free day today and getting make up work for next weekend?

Next time MCPS has an opening for superintendent, or even facilities manager, I suggest you apply.

Why is it a good thing that they wouldn't have to make it up? If you don't actually care about school, then lobby the state to get rid of the instructional day requirement. How do you expect kids at BarT and other child care programs to participate in virtual classes?

Regardless, MCPS doesn't have an approved virtual plan. They can't call a virtual day. Or if they did, they couldn't count it as an instructional day.

Just like they did at BarT and other childcare programs during COVID? You just want to whine.

Right. That's exactly my point. Exactly. It doesn't work.

Let the kids and teachers be happy. It’s f’ing cold and icy.

If you are so miserable, give your kids lists of chores, study for hours, and make them make you dinner.

The rest of us like that our kids and teens get sleep, sledding, and smiles

Your kids can't walk on sidewalks with some slippery spots? Really?

You guys are so out of touch. You need to spend a winter in update New York or Minnesota.

We don’t live in NY or Minnesota which is why we’re in this predicament right now. Snow is rare. The county wasn’t prepared. How is this hard for you to understand?

Excuses excuses. Go outside today and practice walking on sone slippery thoughts so you’re better prepared next time. You’ve got a whole day to practice now!

This! Here's your chance guys! More snow coming Friday.

In other words, you don't have a real job.

We do. You just won’t catch us complaining about doing something as basic as parenting. You knew these things were possibilities prior to having children yet act so shocked when they do. Next time, plan better. At the very least, think every possible scenario through first.

Have they cut the budget for these services over time? Obviously this place has never been western NY in terms of snow removal but I grew up around here and IMO the ability to handle minor snow events has declined over time. Either that or the tolerance for anything other than completely ice/snow free sidewalks and roads.

But anyway, I thought it was a bit odd that central office was giving itself a 2hr delay today when there was no similar OPM call. Clearly someone there was scared about having to drive to work.

I think it's both. And we're raising the next generation to believe that any snow or lingering ice warrants a snow day, like in the deep south.

They called it at 7:34 am. High school on a 2-hour delay starts at 9:45 am. Nobody was on a bus or walking to school yet. (My high school senior is going back to bed.)

That’s still too late for those of us with a long drive.

Why the long drive? Were you at the cabin extra day? Or are you one of the kids my kid knows who lives in Frederick or Howard County but attends MCPS?

Not the pp but magnet school buses leave around 8:15am

Well, then you are still fine as they announced at 7.45 am

Enjoy falling further behind with work?

Some of us have jobs.

Anonymous wrote:Yes this seems like a VERY late call to me. Probably was waiting until the last minute. Is there a published list of cutoff times that MCPS tries to adhere to?

This is par for the course. They like to announce late opening to give them time to make a decision — then they announce closure at around 8 am.

lol you keep posting like you’re the only person who works. We all do. We just all learned how to figure it out without the constant whining. Maybe you just are terrible at your job. Feel bad for you.

For the people worried about extending the year as far as Juneteenth, the last day of school this year is currently set for Thursday June 13th. They could have makeup days the 14th, 17th and 18th, as well as other designated days during the year.
