Another snow day!

So I got news for you guys. We will probably also have school canceled on Friday because it looks like it's going to snow all day on Friday

Have they cut the budget for these services over time? Obviously this place has never been western NY in terms of snow removal but I grew up around here and IMO the ability to handle minor snow events has declined over time. Either that or the tolerance for anything other than completely ice/snow free sidewalks and roads.

But anyway, I thought it was a bit odd that central office was giving itself a 2hr delay today when there was no similar OPM call. Clearly someone there was scared about having to drive to work.

People calm the f down.

Let the kids and teachers be happy. It’s f’ing cold and icy.

If you are so miserable, give your kids lists of chores, study for hours, and make them make you dinner.

The rest of us like that our kids and teens get sleep, sledding, and smiles

They're going up anyway so yes I would like basic government services covered.

Yeah I'm so glad that for one extra dollar the grocery store will sell me everything in stock!

Damnit it’s clear. Get these kids back in school. The learning loss is scandalous.

It’s the end of the semester so all this week would have been is make ups of last week’s MAP testing and pulling teeth to get kids to complete missing work before grades are due. Little new learning is happening this time of year because of the pressure being placed solely on teachers to get kids to score higher on standardized tests and turn in all work to get inflated grades to make the schools look good.

Ummmm for the majority of students, it is.

No map testing for kids in AP classes trying to learn a lot of content before the exam

You can take any AP test without taking the actual class. All the kids in the W schools figure it out and some boast about meeting their goal of taking every AP test. Sorry your kid needs to be spoon fed

Paying $100 and showing up isn't the point of an AP test.

If it’s now persistent ice it’s because they failed to remove it yesterday and froze overnight. We walked up to our ES yesterday and it was plowed to the pavement.

Breaking news: this is a huge county. Conditions might be different in other places. The world doesn’t revolve around you.

They have been fully capable of clearing it in past years. I don’t remember ever getting an oops we couldn’t get the school grounds cleared 2 hrs bf school was scheduled to start. They would have known this last night. Add this to the kids already in school - hey it’s windy early dismissal sorry we didn’t bother to tell you sooner.

Everyone knew that morning (last week) it was a possibility. It was your job to know this as a parent. The rest of us did. Maybe time to do some self reflection rather than blame everyone else.

It’s not a matter of not knowing it was a possibility. It’s the fact that the decision could have and should have been made at 6 am not 8:40. There was no reason for that - other districts made the call ahead of the school day. Same as this. MCPS knew they hadn’t cleared its properties last night/5 am this morning but didn’t make the call when they should have.

The real problem with MCPS is that it's too damn big to operate efficiently. It's the biggest school district in the country that is not a city or in the south. But subdividing the county or creating some different model would incite huge controversies over income, class, race, ethnicity so no one will ever touch it. Which is unfortunate because it is low income kids who are the worst off as a result of MCPS inefficiency and incompetence.

The main roads are clear and dry. A lot of neighborhoods aren’t. Do you really not understand that?

So many people telling us all they hate their kids and actually having to parent but use the school system as their cover.

They did. County roads are fine. It's apparently just MCPS that didn't bother to do anything.

You know this how?

No the roads aren't fine. My down county neighborhood is a sheet of ice. The County didn't send any plows through until 5 pm yesterday - that was way too late. Everything just froze overnight.

And what happened when you drove on the roads?

In hospital all day with broken collarbone.

People would have complained about that too.

That was a foolish thing to say during covid, and it hasn't gotten any less foolish since then.

They just hate everything and take any excuse to make themselves feel superior in their imagination.
