It’s the law. MCPS is required by the state to have 180 days of school.

So then why is our school always 185 days PLUS the days that can be used for makeups

That's not how it is in MCPS. We now have 182 days each year; prior to that it was 184.

So now we have used all the snow days. Many of the makeup days are problematic:

1/29: So early it would be hard to get approval to use this
3/25: Spring Break
3/26: Spring Break
4/10: Eid Al Fitr
4/22: First night of Passover
6/14: Would push final grading day to 6/17, which means teachers work on Eid Al Adha
6/17: Eid Al Adha
6/18: Very late

I'd say 4/22. 1/29 is a grading a reporting day whereas 4/22 is a professional development day where we would probably have to sit through some very boring presentation about how we should let kids run the classroom in the name of equity. Eid is celebrated during the day but Passover is celebrated at night so it's not as much of a hardship to have to work that day

The problem is that another weather closure could risk 4/10 if we don’t select 1/29. I say do 1/29 and then 4/22 there is another day off again

Let the kids and teachers be happy. It’s f’ing cold and icy.

If you are so miserable, give your kids lists of chores, study for hours, and make them make you dinner.

The rest of us like that our kids and teens get sleep, sledding, and smiles

lol, this.

My kids loved sleeping in, and then sledding and building snow castles and making snow angels (ES age).

Rest of you Karens, can't wait to hear your outrage on Friday when MCPS will close schools again. Its been so many years since we had a good snowfall and instead of letting your kids have fun, all you care about is missing school. Weren't you ever a kid?

I doubt you actually have young kids. The snow was quite fluffy-- it didn't stick at all. You weren't building snow forts with what we got this week.

I’m hoping tomorrow will have 2 hour delay so my teen can sleep in. It’s really freaking cold to walk and stand in the wind at 7am. I seriously don’t care if they miss 2 hours of education.

If you think it's that awful, then drive them to school. But the 5 degree difference between 7 and 9AM isn't going to change anything. Are you unfamiliar with the concept if dressing in layers?

Almost 6:30 AM. It’s 19 deg and feels like 19. We will give DS a ride to Blair rather than have him stand at the bus stop.

A delay would have helped.

Warm clothes, coat, hat, gloves. Enjoy the day.

No, it's morelike Fox News gets a lot of mileage from mocking liberal public school systems, they probably even have some people on the payroll scraping barrels to find stories like this one.

Guess you missed all of 2020-21 when Jennifer Reesman, Dawn Iannaco-Hahn, and Margery Smelkinson constantly called Fox 5. I was an intern then and it was absurd. It was a near daily basis event. Everyone was so sick of them.

I bet they were paid. Didn't know their names... but I'm sure they were here too, whining about how they had to see smiles and how their twins couldn't talk because their nannies were allowed to mask.

Why doesn't he have a winter jacket?

Few people who live in central MD have a winter jacket suitable for standing outside for 30 min in 19 deg F. If you buy a Canada Goose, you’ll be mugged.

Many kids don't wear them for some reasons. It clearly wasn't a magnet-program requirement or that parent would have made sure the jacket was glued on.

They’ve lost their credibility with that last minute closing announcement.

Yeah wasn't good for making a snowman but we had fun sledding

Of for FfS you don't wait for a bus for 30 my. If your teenager won't wear a coat that's on him

I'm not sure if it's the DMV in general or particularly Dcum, but so many people here are wildly out of touch.

Do you think everyone in Minnesota has an $800 winter coat? So, particularly when it comes to kids, they generally have $100 ski jackets. What you wear under the jacket is just as important as the jacket. A basic winter coat with a long sleeve tshirt and sweatshirt would absolutely be suitable through the teens.

Will you be toasty warm? Perhaps not, but it is certainly not going to be dangerous. Cold weather is much easier to deal with than heavy rain.
