IL for CS. UC Bolder and U of Utah for merit + outdoorsy. Florida bcs there's some grandparent thing?

UVA really far far down on list of OOS public schools here these days. So much so I just inquired with friends about it and nobody had any interest.

I’m in Manhattan and it is very desirable in our private school

I'm from California and literally had never heard of UVA before moving to the East Coast for college in 2000.

No one out west is considering UVA, unless you have some sort of familial ties to the DMV area or the school itself.

[b]I’m from Virginia
and had never heard of any of the UC schools except Berkeley and UCLA before reading DCUM.

That's why. VA folks apparently don't know much about outside of VA.

That's an easy question - they couldn't get in. Eye popping difficult in CA.

And from the PPs from California who say that they had never heard of UVA, apparently CA folks don't know much about places outside of CA.

Yes this is ridiculous. I’m from a college town in the middle of the country and I knew about all of these schools when I was in high school 30 years ago. In fact I knew people who applied and attended UCSD and I also knew people who attended UVA. I had even heard of UC Davis and knew a little about it.

And yet there are 283 CALIFORNIANs in the most recent UVA entering class

No. 68 Californians in the freshman class. 276 total undergraduates. 560 including graduate, law, med etc.

That’s a lot for a small flagship

Oxymoron

Sure is...like 1.7% of the entering class [/quote

It's really 7% of any OOS US student since 10% is international.

It's more significant than you initially think.

UVA received 56,000 applications for 3,900 spots. It doesn’t need your understanding or approval.

It's a special, special place.

UVA used to be discussed by my MD friends as an option for their kids, but over the past few years has seemed to turn into an obsession to get their kids in. Maybe it is a competition amount their peers? Maybe UMD is seen as second rate/they want to be out of state? Something seems to have changed in the past few years.

And then on this forum there is an obsession over it. I get it is a good school, but seems over the top.

HOnest to God, OP- I've truly never heard of this obsession you're talking about. Most families in MD don't want to spend UVA $$ when they can send their kids to UMD for more than half the price. Moreover, if they're willing to spend that money, they'd rather go to GEorgetown or Hopkins. I'm hearing kids around here who want to go out of state prefer places like UNC, Florida, Penn State, or somewhere upstate.

UC schools is a NOVA/DC status thing. Most of them are in crappy areas and overrated.

More Maryland high school seniors apply to Michigan than to UVA.

A troll started this thread to goad you into attacking UVa. It’s all theater of the mentally disturbed.

It's getting quite tiresome.
