What is the obsession with UVA for out of staters?

That is odd.

I have not known anyone who chose Michigan over UC Berkeley. I lived in Chicago for many years, and UC Berkeley is generally considered as good as (or a little bit lower than) Chicago or Northwestern. Michigan is far away, even though it is within driving distance.

Is it trying to be? I don’t get the sense it is. And that is ok.

Why wouldn’t they?

But none of them dropped their UC Berkeley or UCLA applications.

For your information, UVA's EA decision was announced much earlier than Michigan's RD decision.

At least for high-stats kids, they do not think Michigan is comparable to UCLA, let alone UC Berkeley.

That's the California Effect. Kids from the meat-grinder culture of the East Coast get all dewy over the prospects of spending their college years in sunny Westwood or Berkeley, just a stones throw from the beach or the bay. So yeah, keep those apps outstanding and see if you hit a lottery ticket with admission to a UC.

I think posters are underestimating what a severe turnoff Michigan winters are to most kids.

Most kids aren’t good enough to qualify for any of these elite public universities. Furthermore, for the ones who do, Parchment data seems to disagree with your assessment.

I think it’s more of a severe turnoff to older people who are set in their locales.

Parchment also says that 1 out of 3 students accepted both to Harvard and Michigan choose Michigan, which is patently ridiculous. I take Parchment with a huge grain of salt.

Well, it doesn't give any insight into how many that is or whether there are other circumstances (e.g. recruited athlete).

Then again, Michigan has been sign stealing signals in football, they may also be intercepting Parchment data.

Parchment could be secretly owned by Larry Page.

I can’t believe two out of ten admits would chose UVA! It’s totally ridiculous!

7 out of 10 choose MIT over Harvard. I bet you can’t believe 5hat either.
Anonymous
I am not surprised at all. It is between MIT and Harvard. Either is great.

Michigan vs. Harvard?

think twice.

Is Michigan "MIT of the Midwest"? I heard about that before.

Is parchment based on actual data? How is it collected?
Anonymous
Michigan offers things that Harvard and MIT cannot and never will. I’ll give the academic superiority to the HM. For the combined experience of academics, athletics, and socially, Michigan has few peers. Lots of 18 year olds are looking for the total package, so I’d say 3 out of ten is not out of line.
