Should Chap Peterson be worried?

The Gen Z of Salim supporters need a history lesson.

In the early 2000s, same-sex marriage was not widely supported in the United States. Until 2012, it was political suicide to come out and support same sex marriage. In 2004, only 42% of Americans supported same-sex marriage. At that time, even Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden did not support same-sex marriage. Then-Senator Clinton only voted down a federal ban on same sex marriage in 2004 but remarked she believed marriage was between a man and a woman. In 2008, Biden also opening opposed same sex marriage along with every other Democrat running for president that year. During the VP debates, Biden stated "neither he nor Obama supported transforming civil unions into marriages." It was not until 2012 when Biden openly supported same sex marriage during a live broadcast without the approval of the White House that the political winds in support of same sex marriage started to turn. By 2015, when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage, 55% of Americans supported it. Yes, today, support for same-sex marriage has continued to increase with a record-high 70% of Americans supporting it in 2021. This is a significant increase from the 27% of Americans who supported legal recognition of gay and lesbian marriages in 1996, when Gallup first asked the question.

It's important to recognize that people change over time, and their opinions and actions may not reflect who they are today. Instead of focusing on past opinions, it's more productive to listen to what a person is saying and doing right now. Right now, the Salim campaign has produced only negative ads in this race. Negative campaigning can be effective in some cases, but it can also be detrimental to a candidate's reputation and the election process. It can also lead to increased polarization and decreased trust in the political process. Salim should consider focusing on his own platform and policies, rather than attacking Chap.

BS. It was absolutely unpopular for many people back then, at least people in the civilized states. Some of our friends moved out of VA specifically because of this.

It only became legal in VA because of the Supreme Court ruling in 2014. Prior to that, there were multiple outright BANS on gay marriage (1975, 1997, and 2004). The VA bigots even amended the freaking state constitution to ban gay marriage in 2006. Petersen supported that as well:
https://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?051+vot+HV0938+HJ0586

This wan't just "not a lot of support" for gay marriage - it was quite the opposite. VA was actively hostile towards gay marriage. The ban wasn't repealed until 2020 and the amendment still stands today because of the POS Rs.

And I definitely remember the disgusting VA Republican GA that had control until only recently. They were pushing forced vaginal probes for women seeking abortions, etc. VA

As recently as 2018, Petersen has been voting against gay marriage:

I think this is the most mailings I’ve ever received for a political race, and it is a state house primary. Amazing.

Did you look at the vote pattern of the bill you shared? Every Democrat voted against and every Republican voted for it. Republicans had the majority on this committee. The Democrats who voted with Chap were Saslaw (D-35), Howell (D-32), Lucas (D-18), Edwards (D-21), Deeds (D-25), and Sturtevant (D-12).

As a liberal Dem whose kids suffered through covid school closures, I will forever be grateful to Chap. Never have I felt so personally indebted to a politician.

While it's nice that you appreciate him for sending your child to school, what has he done to protect children from gun violence, the leading cause of death for children? Nothing.

Don't listen to Chap when he says that he voted down assault weapons bans. As a fellow Dem, I cannot forgive Chap for how he continues to permit loose gun regulations, including assault weapons. In 2020, Chap was one of four conservative democrats who voted against banning sales of assault weapons in committee. His words: “You can’t discount people that were raised and grew up in this state and have their own traditions. You can’t just suddenly kick them to the curb.” Senator Petersen would do well to learn the impact of an AR-15 on the human body. A doctor who testified for Congress after the Uvalde massacre shared that the child victims were "decimated and decapitated" by an AR-15.

In April 2021, he threw several tantrums on the Senate Floor around HB1992 (2021) after then-Governor Northam attempted to expand penalties around firearm possession on individuals with assault and battery charges. To anyone who has not voted yet, I'd encourage you to listen to the floor discussion around the 6 hour 15 minute mark here. It's appalling to watch him argue that domestic violence offenders should get their gun rights back.

Chap got an F from the NRA (though to be fair he got higher grades in the early 2010's). He must be doing something right on the gun control front...
