Sorry for your loss.

Any idea if/how he and Christine knew one another?

From his FB he seemed close to family. It's all very sad.

Are we seeing the same FB page? The one I see is mostly about smoking pot and how stupid the government is.

More distraught than the fact that he was smashing another woman?

Where is your proof? It is horrible that you are spreading rumors and disparaging the woman who was murdered. Please have some decency.

+1. I think it's likely that the story of what happened actually has nothing to do with cheating. Posters jumped to a lot of conclusions based on the WTOP story, which is either poorly written or intentionally slanted. I think it's possible or likely that the au pair was being attacked and Christine Banfield intervened, and then the husband heard a disturbance/was called to help and shot the guy.

I don't understand anyone questioning why the husband had a gun. In his house. What planet are you on? I'm in favor of gun control. A lot of gun control. But a gun in your house for self-defense is very basic.

Anyway. I guess I should be surprised how people reacted, but it sure is disheartening. If nothing else, a 4 year old lost her mother.

Christine was the nicest and most generous person I have ever met, and I am deeply sad and shocked with this tragedy.

Is that why he had a gun in the house?

yes, he would have a gun as part of his job

He worked for the IRS. A bean counter with a gun?

An IRS Special Agent does carry a gun.

Still struggling to understand what type of tax enforcement requires a gun

OMG, it's not that hard to figure out.

IRS agent recruiters visited my grad school; they wanted young, fresh accountants. You had to go through the weeks-long special agent training in Georgia and you essentially became an accountant agent investigating financial crimes. Think mafia, racketeering, tax evading, dark web stuff. Everything leaves a money trail.

Yeah, that’s my point. Even a passing familiarity with prohibition or NY/NJ mob activities should be sufficient context to understand why agents might be armed.

It is horrible for the little girl. That said, the original posts and speculation here wondered about a love triangle and that may well be what the facts will show. A woman stabbed to death in a bedroom by a man who was let into the house or by her husband, that man shot by her husband...wasn't there a case with similar facts where the husband set it up to make it look like the wife's bfriend killed her and he killed him defending her but he had killed both?

This. And I won't say anything else, but...THIS.

Being cheated on, if that is the case, as it appears to be, sucks. Someone being murdered is a bit more, no?

Someone on FB pointed out that the murder(s) were the day after the husband's birthday.

WTF? Where are you getting this "it appears to be" the case nonsense? No one has reported that from any reputable source, only people posting on an anonymous forum. People like you exist just to stir the pot by trading in rumors as if they're established facts. Nothing established here yet.

It’s possible but not likely for at least two reasons (1) the guy was 39, most APs date guys their age and (2) most host families do not let boyfriends (especially 39 year old ones!) sleep over, given the young children in the house. Typically APs sleep at their boyfriends’ homes and come back to the host family for their shift.

"Most au pairs date guys their age"
"Most host families do not..."
"Typically au pairs sleep...."

Wow. You seem to have magical knowledge of Universal Truths About Au Pairs.

Your guesses combined with your own personal experience (if there really is any) do not constitute universal "mosts" and "typicals," PP. You're spinning hard to try to make this event into something you can brag you know something about, thanks to your understanding of au pairs' sex lives. Even if you are or were an au pair yourself, you just dont' get to proclaim what you guess "most" people do.

Huh? Most 22 year olds date people their age. That’s just… a fact. Of course there are 22 year olds dating 39 year olds. Might have happened here. But it’s not typical.

That statement applies whether said 22 year old is an Au pair or not.

“Spinning hard so you can brag about something” - ok sure Jan.

Does she know why he was at the house?

What did he do for a living?

Agree that this post presents a lot of things as “truths” that are just weird assumptions.

I'm surprised no one has a theory yet that the husband cheated on his wife with the guy he killed...
