I would be afraid walking around anywhere with Trump signs or confederate flags. I think those people are loose cannons and I would feel uncomfortable and afraid. And I'm white.

That’s fantastic! All it takes is a Trump sign to keep someone like you away? That’s amazing!!!!

We visited in 2021. I was more put off by the confederate flags, MAGA hats, gun worshiping signs, tshirts/bumper stickers trying to stick it to the libs, and the chick who told me to go back to my country. But yes, OP found the fat people the most offensive.

this is why I don't want to visit certain parts of the country.

I'm an immigrant and in a biracial relationship, with kids. I don't want my kids to be exposed to this kind of ugly. They will eventually. No need to expose them this kind of hate early in their lives.

You were just walking around Dollywood with your family (or Pigeon Forge? Gatlinburg?)and saw all that? And then someone just out of the blue said to go back to your country?

It was Gatlinburg. We were walking around on the main street (not sure of name but I think it's the main drag), it's full of kitschy shops/places to eat, street was crowded. This woman (maybe in her 30s?) looked at me in the eye and told me to go back to my country. And then she kept walking. Anymore details you need PP?

No, I just find it surprising. Most tourists there are busy buying all the discounted items and souvenirs for sale or eating fast food.

It's kind of weird that you monitor your neighbor's weights. Do you report weekly to your Stasi handler?

OMG, I thought I was the only one who knew way too much about Stasi and their methods. I even visited the Stasi museum in Leipzig and spent hours there. The docents loved me because few people come to visit.

Unless they see a person of color. Then the MAGA comes out.

It's the Trump effect. Those racists feel more emboldened now more than ever.

I was in Cumberland with my family - biracial- and got dirty looks from this old white guy with a hat that resembed MAGA.

My kids are pretty insulated from this type of ugliness here in the DC area, but unfortunately, they will face this when they leave their bubble.

Actually, that part of Tennessee has a fairly large number of immigrants from Mexico. Many of them work in the factories. There are also quite a few biracial children enrolled in the schools.

Please stay out of Arlington. We went to Arlington Fair on Saturday and received many side eyes and outright insults from white people. The immigrants were nice.

And do they feel welcomed there? I assume they moved there because of the jobs so even if they get harrassed they are going to stick it out because they need the job. This is what my father went through in a different state in the 70s and 80s.

PP here. I'm not going to say everyone is welcoming. I do have some experience with the schools and literacy programs in East Tennessee. Just trying to give a more balanced view of the people there. I'm sorry for any harrassment your father experienced.

Less sugar than orange juice. Smart.

Who lets their one year old drink orange juice? Gross.

As if apple juice would be any better.

Awful. I had to report child abuse from my dental office from kids with bombed out teeth. Child neglect is no joke.

It is so sad. I can’t count the number of parents who let their kids drink juice all day out of a bottle or sippy cup and think it was better for them than soda. Even after extensive extractions and stainless steel crowns, they would pack a Capri Sun in the lunchbox because their child doesn’t “like” water. Pediatricians and Nurses that see children for vaccinations really need to up their game in the dental division.
