Are conservatives boycotting Disney now?

That would be great! No more double strollers and "rascal" motorized wheel chairs.

Why do you think this would have any impact on that?

This is such a self own, jut like the other right wing boycotts.

the best is disantis playing footsie with the local tax code that would cost each Orlando taxpayer over $2000.

Our kids are young and I wasn’t super excited about the idea but they offered to pay for most of it and it is really the only time that works for everyone before the older cousins go off to college. So SIL has been making the arrangements for lodging, which parks we’d go to, etc. But FIL just told DH and SIL we need to pause the planning until we “see what happens with Disney.” No one had any idea what he was talking about, it’s apparently not a money thing, but then DH heard from someone else that some conservative pundits are encouraging folks to boycott Disney over their opposition of Desantis’ new law. I mean, we never asked for this trip so I am fine to cancel but at some point we need to book flights and I’m not messing around with needless drama for months. Is this really a thing? Or is everyone worries Disney would go under if they lose their tax exempt status?

Disney stock is in a tailspin.

Yep. I bought on the dip.

Also, I didn’t know they were tax exempt!

Disney isn’t tax exempt.

(The second) 10:37 here And I didn’t think they were which is why I was surprised when OP said they were. Either way, in my Disney groups there are people who are boycotting/not patronizing Disney. That’s fine, it’s completely their right. The same way some people don’t patronize Chick-fil-A. Less crowds is always better!

OP is confused. When Disney World was being planned, Walt Disney made an agreement with Florida to essentially create his own jurisdiction, called Reedy Creek Improvement District. In doing so, he was able to do things like build new rides, hotels, etc. without having to get everything approved by Orange and Osceola County Boards (the two counties in which Disney World is located). In return, Walt Disney Company provides for its own trash collection, fire protection, road maintenance, etc.

This doesn’t mean Disney doesn’t pay taxes. Of course they do. Having their own improvement district just means they take on the cost of running things within that district, in return for more efficient operations (since they don’t need to go through local approval processes for new buildings).

DeSantis wants to revoke Reedy Creek Improvement District, which will actually raise the cost for local Florida residents of having Disney World there, since they’ll have to pay for all of those services. The counties will also have to deal with approving new rides, hotels, etc. It’s a terrible deal for Florida.

OP here and yes sorry, I was confused! Thank you for the detailed explanation!

And yeah, I’m really tempted to just pull out of this but I’m letting DH deal with his family. At least early on it sounded like this trip was important to his parents, who are getting older and likely won’t be up for it for much longer, so the whole 180 is just bizarre.

PP here — no worries. It’s a really idiosyncratic arrangement that Disney figured out for itself (but one that makes a huge amount of sense for a corporation with a ton of money and a desire for maximum control over its operations).

When they started building the park the local government was not capable of providing the services.

I would argue the local government is still not capable of providing the services, and they will certainly be at a worse level than what Disney provides for itself now - and very expensive for taxpayers. Seems like a great way to s***w everyone here.

I struggle to see what the end game is here for these maroon Republicans. What do they think happens after Disney loses its private government? Is this just a horse head in the bed for other corporations?

The republicans want a government like Russia has. I am sure republicans in Florida have their hands out excepting Disney to paid them off or they want Disney to shut down so one of their friends can buy it on the cheap. It’s always some type of grift with the republicans.

It would be devastating to the state if Disney decided to leave - not that they even could. That's why I am having a hard time seeing where exactly this goes.

I would bet Disney is the state’s largest employer — or certainly the anchor of Orlando tourism. If I ran Universal, Legoland, Sea World, etc. I’d be worried about anything happening to Disney World, as I’m sure a percentage of the visitors to those parks are people who are tacking a few days onto a Disney World trip.

Disney employs roughly 80k people in Florida. Publix employs 225k. Jabil and Darden Restaurants 200 and 185k respectively. Disney's headquarters is in Burbank, CA. However, for 500 million Florida tax credit, Disney promised to transfer over 2,000 corporate jobs from CA to FL

The not referring to boys and girls as boys and girls seems bizarre. Guess I’m a conservative??

Disney World was able to stay open and has moved corporate employees out of CA to FL. They need FL to survive. I hope Disney comes to its senses, sorry libs you are losing.

To the contrary, if DeSantis & company pull the rug out from the Reedy Creek Improvement District, taxpayers will need to pay $1 billion to cover the services that Disney now covers.

I'm not sure this is legal. Disney was targeted, Universal has the same arrangement and Universal was excluded from this law. It also does not go into effect until 2025, allowing DeSantis to run on this law and receive donations, while also allowing the legislature to reverse themselves before this train wreck for Osceola and Orange County taxpayers to kick in.

Would you give up a billion dollars of tax money because you’re so mad about this?

As soon as the churches give up their tax-exempt status.

I think it’s retaliatory and therefore not legal but who knows what this sham of a Supreme Court would do with this and that would take years.

Are you implying that Disney also has tax exempt status? It doesn’t.

And that’s in addition to the $1 billion in bond debt the district currently holds.

Not to mention, it’s almost certain that Orange and Osceola Counties do not currently have the road maintenance crews, fire fighters, police officers, etc. needed to service that area. Currently, Disney has a security crew that provides some law enforcement, while leaving arrests and other matters to local authorities. The counties will have to cover all enforcement now.

Good luck with that!

Well I bet Disney will fire those employees. Maybe the state could hire them…lol! Without security or maintenance Disney will have to close.

That's 80k jobs. Really, that's what Florida wants. And what about all the people who are hired not by Disney, but is supported by the Disney tourism. That's an additional 100-150k jobs lost.

On the other hand, they can tax the hell out of Disneyland. All of the incentives that local governments have to give in order to land large developments like Disney don't exist and the infrastructure already there is too expensive for Disney to threaten to leave.

Disney already pay property taxes. To raise Disney property rate is to rate all the property taxes surrounding Disney.

Good. Glad the republicans are shutting down Disney. Hopefully the republicans will go after Publix unless they write a big check to the governor. Wonder which crony republican will end up owning the Disney site after they arrest the CEO? Reminds me of Russia in the 1990’s. Good times!

Universal does not have the same arrangement.
