If you find a group, let me know. I left last week after the SMOB crap. |
That seems like a really odd reason to me. I think most people would agree there was nothing wrong with the initial post calling attention to the remarks made by the SMOB at the school board meeting. What was wrong were the offensive responses on Twitter, but there’s no reason to think those were made by anyone in the group. I remember those posts, and I looked at the accounts who posted them. I couldn’t always tell where people were from, but when I could tell, they were almost always from people in other parts of the country. When those replies started, members of the group tried to call on people to be civil. And when that wasn’t enough, they deleted the initial post. What more could you have expected? The more troubling thing to me has been the number of antivaxxers and conspiracy theorists in the group. They’re still a fringe part of that group, but they’re a hard fringe to control. |
I hear you but the leaders of that group don’t think the SMOB position should exist in the first place and they have made disparaging comments about that on more than one occasion. I think that, coupled with drawing attention to the SMOB’s comments, was really unfair and designed to create negative sentiment towards this student and it did. I can’t forgive a group of old women picking on a kid, especially a group that hangs their hat on being “mental health professionals” every chance they get. And whether the group likes it or not, kids actually look up to the SMOB and there are kids who are genuinely interested in running for the position. Not only is dragging the SMOB unfair but it potentially discourages students from wanting to run and speaking up on important issues because they fear blowback. And yes the antivax, anti-mask, conspiracy stuff was out of control. They don’t know how to control those posters - they are allowed to post over and over again, violating the rules and end up drowning out the voices of others. Back in the Fall of 2021 there was a particular poster that the group’s leaders seemed to love who was clearly anti-vax. I hope they disband now that their work of removing masks has been accomplished. |
That’s not entirely true- some of them support the SMOB position, but you’re right that there’s a sizable and vocal contingent that don’t. I don’t really understand why some have such a problem with the SMOB position. How often is that really the deciding vote? I’m not sure what you’re referencing when you say they picked on a kid. They posted a video of a voting board member saying something that many people would find troubling. That’s not picking on her. If the SMOB can’t be held accountable for her own statements at board meetings, then maybe there shouldn’t be a SMOB. But I think they can. And the somewhat unfortunate reality is that the SMOB has often been the most capable and mature member of the board. I'm also not sure what you're referring to with the antivaxx poster. Yes, there are a couple vocal antivaxxers that post on the Facebook group. After a while, the admins came down pretty hard on antivaxx posts, although there's still the occasional comment in the replies to posts. But there are nutty people in every group. |
